Navy chow

No, American servicemen in the Gulf are not going hungry.

G.P. Keenan | May 6, 2026

Staged photographs have been posted all over social media recently purporting to show starvation rations being fed to our troops; i.e., a small taco (or something) on a plastic tray with a piece of stale bread and so on. In these photographs there can also be seen a brick wall in the background. I served on a cruiser and six carriers during my career and for the life of me I cannot remember ever seeing a brick wall on any of the mess decks I ate in. That would make it rather difficult to stay afloat, don’t you think?

Our military is well fed and always has been. What is especially curious is the fact that just a few weeks before all these staged photos and baseless lies infested the internet, those same America haters were complaining about our troops and sailors being fed steak and lobster and were complaining that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was “wasting” defense money on these “exorbitant” meals. Having  been one of those troops for 25 years. I know how it feels to receive a special meal once in a while. It certainly served as a big morale booster when you are deployed for months at a time.

The cruiser I served on was in 1967/68 when Vietnam was in full swing and that ship was home ported just north of Naples, Italy, in a small fishing village called Gaeta. It was the flagship of the Commander U.S. Sixth Fleet. At the same time one of my younger brothers was serving on the carrier Forrestal (CV-59), one of the six carriers I would serve on 10 years later (1976-79).

My guess is that the vast majority of these America haters have never even seen one day in uniform and, therefore, have absolutely no personal experience upon which to base their lies and staged photos.

My father was a naval officer during WWII, serving on an LST in the South Pacific. They ate like kings.

One of my husband's friends was in the Navy on a submarine. He always had high praise for the food.

My only experience with Navy chow was as one of a group of volunteer firefighters in the early '70s undergoing flammable liquids and gases firefighting training at PAX River. Not only was the food good, there was plenty of it, and we ate well. To our amazement, there were even vending machines with a wide variety of cans of hot food if you didn't like what was in the mess hall.
But then, I have eaten C-rations and MREs, and found them to be palatable for the most part, too.  (Seems there is always a flavor someone doesn't like, but I grew up in a family where you ate what you had.)

Americans have had the best fed military for decades.

My son served aboard a submarine, and he told me once it was the best chow he ever had.

The Navy and Air Force have always had great chow....Now the Marines and Army survive on MRE's until they can set up a base camp. Mike's first tour in Iraq during the invasion period they ate MRE's..I used to send him coffee, candy, cookies, ramen...now his second tour..same place, Balad..their mess hall was huge..even had some fast food companies there...Mike arranged for OutBack to feed some outposts using their Chinooks...when he asked for some for his crews they said no.....I wrote Outback a letter and have refused to eat there since..

My FIL, A WW eleven Navy vet, absolutely loved to eat SOS.   Creamed chipped beef on toast or cuban bread.

I do that as well. The old time chip beef in a package isn't around any more. But there is some pressed beef in little jars that will work in a pinch.

We use Budding Beef for sandwiches and cut it up in small pieces, then smother it with white sauce and serve it on toast!
