Virginia Democrat Says He Understands Rural Americans Because He Watched ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’

A Virginia Democrat is drawing backlash after suggesting he understands rural America because he grew up watching television shows like “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

State Sen. Lamont Bagby (D-VA) made the remarks during a heated debate over the state’s controversial redistricting overhaul.

The comments came as Democrats push a sweeping congressional map.

The new gerrymandered map would dramatically dilute rural representation and cement long-term political control.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Believe it or not, when I first got to North Dakota (on a National Science Foundation full ride to do Uranium geochemistry research), most of the locals knowledge of people with a southern accent stemmed from the Dukes of Hazard and the Beverly Hillbillies.
It was indeed an uphill battle.
I watched Johnny Carson and learned to speak "no accent" American so I could conduct basic transactions and not be treated like someone who had an IQ in the single digits. F'n Yankee media.

But to have someone who claims to be a Virginian say this? Maybe he needs to watch a season or two of Green Acres so he can be better versed in rural southern life.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...

I'm guessing this is what he really thinks of rural people.

:thud: :thud:  You can't fix stupid nor can you fix liberal.

Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

It was the only name he remembered.  Now, if he'd said Ernest T. Bass I might have believed him....
