Some former Supreme Court clerks have spoken out about Justice Elena Kagan's approach to being a boss, going so far as calling it "abusive," but one of her former clerks is defending the justice, saying the comments are "overblown."

Alito: The Justice Who Reshaped the Supreme Court and Restored the Constitution, by Mollie Hemingway, was published Tuesday, providing an inside look into what some former clerks think of the justices. The book's release comes at a time when confidence and trust in the Supreme Court have dipped, and while some former clerks have negative impressions of Kagan, she has one of the highest favorability ratings among Supreme Court justices.

According to the book, Kagan—widely regarded as the intellectual leader of the Court’s liberal bloc—is admired for her sharp legal mind, strategic skill in oral arguments, and ability to build coalitions with conservative justices. But that reputation is paired with repeated accounts from clerks and court insiders describing her as emotionally abusive and demoralizing inside chambers. ...
