The difference is that Iran is completely unreliable, nothing can be trusted at all.  Even the Soviets weren't this bad!  "Trust but verify" made more sense back then.  Iran is completely whack!
Even completely whack has a psychology behind it. It has motivations, no matter how convoluted or obscure.
Trump is a master of getting inside heads.
I'ma wait and see how this plays out.

USSR was never to be trusted. Decades of deceit beginning with the theft of nuclear formula.
Yet Reagan trusted first.

And Libya was more reliable than the Mullahs back then?

Better go back and refresh on the Libyan terrorists camps operating to spread terror around the world.  Like Pan Am Flight 103.

Ghaddafi taught the Mullahs how to spread terror and he was seeking the bomb way back then. He gave it up under Reagan even though we did not pound Libya into the ground.  Just one show of force did the trick and it stuck in his craw.

I'll say it again:  There are actions in the background we know nothing about.

Also, I will not rule out that Reagan said trust but verity but actually did the opposite.

Trump takes sharp turn toward ending Iran war

The Hill
by Colin Meyn and Ellen Mitchell
05/06/26

President Trump announced a sudden end to his operation to break Iran’s hold on the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday night, hours before reports emerged that Washington and Tehran are closing in on a framework of a deal to end the war.

The president again threatened to resume bombing if the deal falls through, but Trump’s moves underline his desire for an off-ramp as economic pain and political pressure mount.

According to Axios, the latest version of a one-page memorandum of understanding between the two sides would create a 30-day window to negotiate a more detailed agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, throttle Iran’s nuclear program and lift U.S. sanctions. Both sides would ease their blockades on shipping through the strait during that period.

“Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Wednesday morning.

“If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before.”

Hein Goemans, a political science professor at the University of Rochester who specializes in war termination, was skeptical that either side was willing to make the necessary concessions to reach a long-term peace deal.

And whatever commitments Iran makes to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, all sides now recognize its military can shut it down again, wreaking havoc on global energy markets.

“They can say whatever they want about the Strait of Hormuz, but that ship has sailed. It is, surprisingly, a diplomatic victory for Iran — a military victory for the United States, but a diplomatic victory for Iran,” he said.

Everyone with any common sense can easily see that Iran is playing Trump for a fool.
It appears Trump wants to differentiate this first military action from any that may follow strictly for the sake of the 60 day limit.  He seems to want the clock to reset to 60 days if another action is needed.  At least that's my take on what Trump and Rubio said.

Executed Iranian prisoners described torture before death, report says

Three Iranian prisoners executed over the weekend described torture, forced confessions and denied legal rights in messages shared with The Jerusalem Post before their deaths, according to a report citing the Kurdistan Human Rights Network.

Yaghoub Karimpour, 43, and Nasser Bakerzadeh, 26, were hanged Saturday, while Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, 28, was executed Sunday at Orumiyeh Central Prison. None were granted final visits with their families, the report said.

Karimpour, who was accused of espionage, said he confessed under pressure after authorities threatened his wife. “Many things were dictated to me, and I wrote untruths involuntarily and out of helplessness,” he wrote.

Bakerzadeh, also accused of spying, said he endured months of solitary confinement and “severe psychological torture.”

Abdollahzadeh, who denied involvement in a protest-related killing, said he was beaten for days and coerced into confessing. “I am completely innocent, but they want to make me a scapegoat,” he said.

According to the report, all three cases involved allegations of coerced confessions, lack of legal representation and trials lasting only minutes.

Map shows US warships massed near Iran as Carrier Group departs

An updated graphic map showing U.S. military assets in the Middle East. (Fox News)

An updated map of U.S. naval assets in the Middle East shows a sustained American military presence near Iran, even as one major carrier group rotates out.

The USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group has departed the region, while the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group is moving through the Indian Ocean toward the Arabian Sea, signaling a repositioning rather than a drawdown.

The map shows a dense concentration of U.S. warships across key zones, including the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean.

Multiple guided-missile destroyers, amphibious ships and support vessels remain positioned near the Strait of Hormuz.

The continued presence comes as the U.S. maintains its naval blockade on Iranian ports and presses forward with negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Here we go again  -- another deadline (sigh)

Live Updates: Trump gives Iran one week to make deal with US, as IDF strikes Hezbollah in Beirut

US President Donald Trump predicted on Wednesday night that the war in Iran will be over quickly, as he seeks a deal to end the stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran's nuclear program.

"When you look at the kind of things that are happening, we are doing that for one very important reason: We cannot allow them to have a nuclear weapon. So I think most people understand that. They understand that what we are doing is right, and it'll be over quickly," Trump told a tele-rally for Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate Burt Jones.......

So China brokered the deal?

Iran has nothing if it does not have China.

No oil revenue due to blockade, all its neighbors against it.  Nothing.
And China needs the oil.

This is a huge WIN for Iran. The only goal of the Mullahs and the IRGC is to live for another day. Each time Trump gives them a week, or ten days, or thirty days, the Iranian regime is popping champagne. They stopped Epic Fury with a bogus ceasefire which they never adhered to. Now they have stopped Project Freedom by promising some kind of "deal", which I am sure they will laugh at while signing it.

Every time Iran stops American military action and get a "temporary postponement", this is considered a major victory to them. Whew! We have another week to murder dissidents and to dig out hidden missiles. If Trump thinks Iran is ever going to surrender for real, he is a fool. Everything they say is a lie. Everything they do is intended to keep them in power for as long as possible. The very first thing Iran will do after they sign a "deal" is to begin to prepare for the next war with Israel and America.

They can never surrender because they are acting on behalf of Allah. And Allah never surrenders. Allah can never be defeated.

Rational fear and anger at vicious murderous Islamic terrorists is the same as irrational antisemitism, according to the Leftists

As some wag on TV put it, 47's negotiating style is like tacking into the wind - first go to port, then to starboard, so no one can divine the actual destination at any given point, just a general direction.

But with so many changes in direction, comes uncertainty, confusion, and eventual collapse. Its no longer about the Art of the Deal, but the Art of  Collapse, where any effort begun, no matter how successful, collapses on the point of victory.

47 talked about "unconditional surrender," but with the latest terms revealed, its the US who surrenders - leaving the Shia 12ers & the IRGC largely intact, surviving to rebuild with a massive cash influx, half of their missiles intact, the Strait and the nuclear material situation still under discussion, both issues easily sidestepped with a clever manipulation or disingenuous 'promise'. So it can be fairly said that 'help is on the way'.

While the world sits quietly at home, fondling its rising wealth, secure behind 47's Big Beautiful Deal, Iran deep underground, quietly rebuilds its nuclear weapons, loosing them at the first given opportunity, achieving the Dream of Allah as revealed to them ...

47 will go down in history, just not with the epitaph he imagines.

Democrats would rather rule over ashes than govern a functioning Republic
