What does mean to "Flare a well"?

It means burning what the well produces in a controlled manner. Unlike what was done in Kuwait.
Scientists, like all discoverers of truth, have always asked, "What?” “How?” “Why?” “What if?” and “Why not?” Questioning science is science.

Yes, it is, which is why I expect the 12ers to do it.

Can crude oil be burned in a controlled manner?

It depends on what the meaning of the word controlled is.

Yes! Controlled means being able to stop the burning at will.

Then this will be the likely course of action for the Iranians, considering the alternative of plugging the wells.

They're going to wait at least until the WPA expires.

If the vote goes in President Trump's favor, they'll trip over themselves to end this!

When it comes to Nukes, they'll lie like rugs.  The IRGC is incapable of letting those go, and Trump is not likely to fall for the expected flurry of lies!  There is no way the current regime is going to allow unfettered inspections, and if they won't nobody's going to believe them.

You have to know where something is to inspect it. Otherwise you are just shooting in the dark... The stakes are too high for that.

Israel Strike Iranian Leadership In Daytime Assault, Echoing Precision Air Power Doctrine In Apparent Push For Regime Change
By Brent Beecham
February 28, 2026

In a dramatic break from conventional military practice, the United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on Iran early Saturday, targeting the heart of the Islamic Republic’s command structure in broad daylight. The operation, which military analysts say closely follows the “centers of gravity” air power theory theorized by Colonel John Warden and refined by retired Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula during the 1991 Gulf War, appeared designed to decapitate senior leadership and neutralize Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal before expanding to secondary targets.

Explosions rocked Tehran and other cities at daybreak local time, catching Iranian officials off guard as they gathered for what Israeli and U.S. sources described as a meeting of senior political and military leaders. Strikes hit the Supreme Leader’s compound, the presidential palace and sites linked to the Supreme National Security Council. Israeli officials reported several high-ranking figures killed, though the fate of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remained uncertain hours later. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the supreme leader was alive “as far as I know,” while Israeli media cited intelligence suggesting he may have been among those targeted or affected.

The daytime timing defied the long-standing preference for nighttime operations intended to maximize stealth and surprise. Analysts said the choice reflected precise intelligence on the leaders’ meeting, prioritizing the political center of gravity over traditional force-protection concerns. This is yet another brilliant Trump deception operation, as he had announced an address to the American nation that would have been in the late hours in Iran.

I actually hope Khamenei was alive and lucid when this happened, as they have rallied around him as leader, and if we killed him that was be extremely demoralizing.

Correct me if I am wrong but Congress has to approve that extension.  After the extension of 30 days, then they have to vote whether or not to declare war.

I hear Iran is flaring their wells. Can't sell it and cannot store it.
Nonsense.  Flaring only pertains to natural gas when no pipeline exists.

Being a liquid, crude can be readily stored by building massive earthen berms to collect the oil produced by wells.

This was done frequently during the early days of the industry in this country, especially at places having blowouts like the Lakeview gusher in California,

I walked the areas surrounding the large Wafra oil field in Kuwait in the 80s.  Pits 50' deep covered half a square mile to contain produced saltwater containing tens of millions of barrels.

The same can be and has been done for oil should the need arise.

Flaring of oil is not an option unless you are trying to sabotage the well.

True of any hydrocarbon storage facility.

Why nicotine of choice for the oilpatch is mostly composed of chewing tobacco.

Now saying that, I still see idiots smoking while filling up their vehicles at the gas pump.

I always tell them to wait to fill up until I have left.

The WPA expires today @DCPatriot

The WPA expired the moment hostilities ceased.

50 U.S. Code § 1542 - Consultation; initial and regular consultations

The President in every possible instance shall consult with Congress before introducing United States Armed Forces into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, and after every such introduction shall consult regularly with the Congress until United States Armed Forces are no longer engaged in hostilities or have been removed from such situations.

The United States Armed Forces stopped engaging in hostilities when the ceasefire started.  If hostilities resume at some point in the future, the 60-day clock starts over.

There can't be an unlimited clock.  There is a defined start line and a defined finish line.  Democrats may not like it, but they are the ones who wrote it.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Jim Jones was a socialist Democrat.

A cigarette won't light gasoline.
In a closed tank, correct.

But the fumes of gasoline are highly flammable and gasoline is volatile while being pumped into an open tank.

And it must be a lighted cigarette.

Not like gasoline as that has light ends.

Think more like diesel.

Depending on the age of the pond and distance  leaving the well, there very well could be C1-C4 light ends present, in enough quantity to ignite,.  Also don;'t forget much like the flash point test, the ignition comes in contact with the lighter end.  Even heavy diesel can have fps to 120F.

It is my humble opinion that your thinking is incorrect.
Of course you can wash off oil on to the ground, but that oil is essentially not useable for anything.
They want to flare the oil so the wells do not fill with water as they lose pressure.

Unusable?  The oil comes from the earth already and only the bottom portion of the pits comes into contact with any oil.  The worse that would happen is that the lighter ends leave and the remaining crude would be of a poorer quality.

And speaking as a Reservoir Engineer, wells do not fill with water unless they are at an advanced production phase and/or coning in oil.  If under pressure maintenance, such as a waterflood, the best course of action would likely be shutting in injection wells.

Of course I have no idea who paid you for your 'expertise'. But I would not hire you. This is just my simple judgement.

I have no idea of your own expertise, but am well aware of mine own.     Have done worldwide reserve assessments and reservoir studies for over 4 decades with three major oil companies, including extensively in the ME

I think the hyperbole the news is given toward the lack of storage space for Iran's crude is just that.

My input is it will not hurt Iran anymore than the blockade hurts it and imposes a less-than-ideal situation for it that it can overcome.

Some isolated damage might occur downhole on a few wells if they choose to shut them in, but should not be considerable.

I've read what it took to put those wells out. They got my ultimate respect, those guys had some huge brass clankers. I am man enough to admit I'm wouldn't be man enough to do that job.
Speculation was that it would take years to do so, but innovation and capitalism won out. One of the neatest solutions involved mounting two MiG engines on a tank chassis and using them to blow the fire out.

Gas routinely gets flared when it has nowhere to go. As for the wells, just choke the wells back or shut them in. You only plug a well when you are ready to abandon it, or when some (usually equipment) problem has made it uncontrollable otherwise. Some reservoirs will suffer damage and perhaps have to be re-stimulated, but it will be less expensive in the end than just burning off oil.
