The promise of underground riches is nothing new in Cornwall. But on Thursday, the region will plumb new depths in the quest to harness Britain’s natural resources.

For the first time, the United Downs deep geothermal power plant will start generating 24/7 electricity at a site near Redruth.


With an output of around three megawatts, enough to power roughly 10,000 homes, the plant cannot exactly be described as game-changing.

Yet experts believe it will help pave the way for similar projects across Britain aimed at tapping into the vast thermal resources below our feet.

In theory, seems a promising adventure in generating power cheaply and efficiently.

In practice, not so nice for the environment due to the horribly contaminated solids and liquids brought to the surface.

The oil industry fights the battle of NORM all the time, and geothermal is bringing this up on steroids.

Yes, it can be handled and safely, but is problematic to do so and costs a lot more than anticipated.

Learned something new today,  These kinds of geological sources are more typical along active fault lines.  I know Iceland is not that awfully far away, but color me surprised that there is anything like this in England.

If they can safely harness it, it might be a gold mine.  Especially with the number of enviro-whackos in the UK, and their hate of hydrocarbon.  A viable source at least.

If it is truly a practical geo-thermal claim, it should be pretty close to the surface.  Still I can't picture any UK cauldrons like seen in Iceland or Yellowstone.
