In a sharp escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboats opened fire on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. The move caused dozens of ships that were attempting to navigate the strait to turn back, while the Iranian government confirmed that the vital waterway is closed despite previous claims to the contrary.

According to reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and maritime security firms, Iranian gunboats approached and fired warning shots, and in some cases live rounds, at vessels attempting passage. At least one tanker and a container ship were targeted, with captains describing “bullets raining” on their ships.

Two Indian-flagged vessels—the VLCC supertanker Jag Annapurna, which was carrying approximately 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil, and the Sanmar Herald — were among those forced westward out of the strait near Larak Island.

Shipping data indicated at least six other tankers halted or reversed course amid the chaos. No major casualties were reported, and crews remained safe, though the incident has threatened the tense ceasefire obtained between the United States and Iran.

The firing came as Iran’s military broadcast radio warnings to all ships declaring the Strait of Hormuz “completely closed again” due to alleged U.S. “piracy” and failure to honor commitments. This reversal directly contradicted Iran’s announcement on April 17 that the waterway would remain open during the truce.

Tehran had framed the brief reopening as a goodwill gesture tied to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire involving Israel and Lebanon, with its foreign minister stating passage was now unrestricted for commercial vessels. Yet within hours of that declaration, Iranian officials cited the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports as a “violation” and moved to close the waterway once again.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf further warned the strait “will not remain open” if the blockade persists.

US intelligence assessments have suggested that Iran likely still has access to around 70 percent of its pre-war ballistic missile stockpiles, and around 60 percent of its missile launchers, The New York Times reports [ https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/us/politics/iran-hormuz-strait-trump.html ].

It also still retains around 40% of its drone arsenal, the report says, citing US intelligence and military officials.

According to the Times, when a two-week ceasefire came into effect between Iran and the US on April 8, Tehran had access to around half of its ballistic missile launchers. Since then, the report says it has managed to dig out another 100 launchers from under the ground, bringing the total of operational missile launchers to around 60% of the pre-war total.

Deal With United States Is ‘Far Off’ Says Iran, as End of Ceasefire Looms

The strategic Strait of Hormuz was again closed on Sunday in the stand-off between Iran and the United States, with Iran’s powerful parliament speaker signalling a final peace deal remained “far” off despite some movement in negotiations.

As mediation efforts continued following high-level talks in Pakistan that failed to reach a deal, Iran said it will not allow the crucial maritime trade chokepoint to re-open until the United States ends a blockade of Iranian ports.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament, said in a televised address on Saturday night that there had been “progress” with Washington “but there are many gaps and some fundamental points remain”.

“We are still far from the final discussion,” said Ghalibaf, one of Tehran’s negotiators in the talks aimed at ending the war launched by Israel and the United States against the Islamic republic.

A two-week ceasefire is set to end on Wednesday unless it is renewed.

Trump made the statement in a post on Truth Social, mocking the IRGC for "helping us without knowing."

"Iran decided to fire bullets yesterday in the Strait of Hormuz — A Total Violation of our Ceasefire Agreement! Many of them were aimed at a French Ship, and a Freighter from the United Kingdom. That wasn’t nice, was it?" Trump wrote.

"My Representatives are going to Islamabad, Pakistan — They will be there tomorrow evening, for Negotiations. Iran recently announced that they were closing the Strait, which is strange, because our BLOCKADE has already closed it. They’re helping us without knowing, and they are the ones that lose with the closed passage, $500 Million Dollars a day! The United States loses nothing. In fact, many Ships are headed, right now, to the U.S., Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska, to load up, compliments of the IRGC, always wanting to be 'the tough guy!'" he continued.

"We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY! If the report is true we still have a ways to go in degrading their stockpiles.

The problem is that the missiles and launchers are under rock so hard and so deep that no bomb can penetrate. They have their own electricity and, presumably, CO2 scrubbers. The facilities dig from the inside out, while surface teams clear the rubble outside.

I find it best to remain realistic when it comes to a nation that for 47 years turned itself into a hardened fortification, planning for every contingency, using most of the nation's revenue to achieve that goal.

President Donald Trump says there is an ongoing fight between "moderates" and "crazies" in Iran amid negotiations with the U.S.

Trump made the statement during an interview with Fox News' Trey Yingst on Sunday, saying Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff were departing for talks in the Middle East on Tuesday.

“If the deal isn’t done, the deal that we made, then I’m going to take out their bridges and their power plants," Trump said. “If they don’t sign this thing, the whole country is going to get blown up.”

“We’re preparing to hit them harder than any country has ever been hit before because you cannot let them have a nuclear weapon," he continued.

Trump went on to say that Iran has "agreed to much" of the deal already.

It took more than 30 hours for sailors to put out the fire aboard the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford last week, sailors and military officials said, as the beleaguered ship continued its monthslong slog through President Trump’s military operations.

The fire started in the ship’s main laundry area last Thursday. By the time it was over, more than 600 sailors and crew members had lost their beds and have since been bunking down on floors and tables, officials said.

The U.S. military’s Central Command said two sailors received treatment for “non-life-threatening injuries.” People on the ship reported that dozens of service members suffered smoke inhalation.

And in the category of non-life-threatening, but still not ideal, many sailors have not been able to do laundry since the fire.

The ship, along with its 4,500 sailors and fighter pilots, was in the Mediterranean on Oct. 24 when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered it to steam to the Caribbean to add weight to President Trump’s pressure campaign on Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s leader before his seizure.

From the Caribbean, the carrier rushed to the Middle East for the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which is now in its third week.

Speaking to sailors on board aircraft carriers is difficult in the best of circumstances. During a war, the ships and military bases involved in operations go “dark,” limiting the ability of service members to communicate with the outside world. The officials and sailors interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The Ford is now entering its 10th month of deployment. It will break the record for longest post-Vietnam War carrier deployment if it is still at sea in mid-April. That record, at 294 days, was set by the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln in 2020.

Crew members on the Ford have been told that their deployment will probably be extended into May, which would put them at an entire year at sea, twice the length of a normal aircraft carrier deployment.

The Navy kept aircraft carriers deployed for nine months at a time, sometimes a little longer, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But deployments are not usually extended past six months. Longer than that, Navy experts say, is very difficult for both the ship and the crew.

Then before you know it, all that Chinese resupply will come on line. The masters, now resupplied with critical materials and components, will use the Chinese satellite they control to find the US forces in real time, and target them before they can strike.

Gotta hand it to 47 for revealing the US targets, so the masters know exactly where the US will be expending more of the US's remaining stockpiles of bombs and missiles.

It would not surprise me if some unofficial faction in China has supplied the masters with a nuke or two, and a few North Korean ICBMs to go with them.

"We’re preparing to hit them harder than any country has ever been hit before because you cannot let them have a nuclear weapon," Trump added.

Those remarks came as Trump mocked the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in a Truth Social post for staking claim to a Strait of Hormuz "blockade" the U.S. military had already put in place.

First thing is I don't think there's anyone really in charge of Iran right now, so whatever deal is made with one party won't hold.

Second, Trump always uses these pauses so far to get troops and material in place before the next round. I think he knows they aren't going to honor the deal.

Iran claims to have 'upper hand,' threatens to shut down oil production

Iranian officials claimed to have the "upper hand" in the Strait of Hormuz this weekend, leading to mixed messages coming out of Tehran.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz says Iran's Foreign Ministry is in conflict with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

"The foreign minister says it's open. The IRGC says it closed. Regardless, it's the U.S. Navy and President Trump as the commander-in-chief that decides what ultimately comes in and comes out. And I think the bigger picture here is that the Iranian regime cannot hold the entire world's economy hostage. They cannot met out collective punishment because of a dispute over its nuclear program," Walz said in a Sunday interview on "Meet the Press."

Iran has rejected taking part in a second round of peace talks with the U.S., Iranian state media reported Sunday.

IRNA News Agency says Iranian officials rejected the talks due to "unrealistic expectations" on the U.S. side.

"Iran rejected taking part in the second round of the talks with the United States," IRNA said in a statement.

"Iran stated that its absence from the second round of talks stems from what it called Washington's excessive demands, unrealistic expectations, constant shifts in stance, repeated contradictions, and the ongoing naval blockade, which it considers a breach of the ceasefire," the agency added.

Vice President JD Vance, Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff were expected to participate in peace talks in Pakistan on Tuesday.
