well, no question is 'stupid'. How else are you going to get the answer?

Being a desert has to do with the amount of rainfall. It can be flat, or it can be some brutal terrain, and what runoff there is tends to cut deep into the landscape. As one example, The Grand Canyon is in desert. So there are deep, steep (almost vertical) sided, relatively narrow channels cut into the landscape, and those defy crossing except by bridges.
There is just not enough sloping real estate to even run a switchbacked road in and out of those canyons.

I think he went bat crap crazy.  Till he left the Prime time spot at Fox, he  walked that "Conservative-MAGA" tight rope pretty well, and pretty much was considered at Top 5 Conservative Pundit.
