Gunman In Old Dominion University Attack Identified As ISIS Supporter

The gunman who opened fire at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on Thursday has been identified as Mohamed Jalloh, a former National Guardsman who was previously convicted of providing material support to the Islamic State (ISIS).

The gunman was identified by New York Post contributor Karol Markowicz, who stated she was reliably informed of the gunman’s name. “I’m reliably informed that the alleged attacker of Old Dominion in is Mohamed Jalloh, the same Jalloh who was previously convicted of providing support to ISIL,” Markowicz posted on X.

No official confirmation has been provided by law enforcement or university officials as of this report.

If accurate, this would link the incident to an individual with a prior conviction related to terrorism. In 2016, a Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, then 26 and a former Army National Guard member from Sterling, Virginia, was arrested for attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

Court documents from that case detail his interactions with an FBI informant, during which he expressed support for violent acts, including contemplating an attack similar to the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. He pleaded guilty in October 2016 and was sentenced to 11 years in prison in February 2017, followed by five years of supervised release.

The 2016 affidavit described Jalloh as a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Sierra Leone, who had quit the National Guard after exposure to radical lectures by the infamous cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

The shooting occurred on the morning of March 12, 2026, in Constant Hall, an academic building on ODU’s main campus that hosts classes in business and public administration.

The FBI is investigating a shooting at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Virginia on Thursday as an act of terrorism after the suspected gunman was identified as a former Army National Guard soldier convicted of supporting ISIS.

Multiple federal sources confirmed to Fox News that the suspected shooter at ODU is Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36. Jalloh is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Sierra Leone, Fox News has learned.

Jalloh, who was in jail for his involvement in supporting the Islamic State, was released approximately 15 months before the fatal shooting at the Virginia university.

In 2017, Jalloh, a former member of the Virginia National Guard, was sentenced to 11 years in prison plus five years supervised release for attempting to provide material support to ISIS, according to the Department of Justice. He was released from jail in Dec. 2024.

He was originally arrested on July 3, 2016, after authorities said he tried to help procure weapons for what he believed would be an ISIS-inspired attack on U.S. soil and separately attempted to send money to support ISIS, according to the criminal complaint.

According to the Justice Department, Jalloh was compelled to leave the U.S. military after he began listening to the online lectures of Al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Aulaqi.

The department also said that Jalloh "praised" the July 2015 terrorist attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee, when a gunman opened fire and killed four U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor.

Jalloh also shared that he had been thinking about conducting an attack similar to the attack at Ft. Hood, Texas, in November 2009, which killed 13 people and wounded 32 others.

The New York Post is reporting that the gunman who shot and injured two at Old Dominion University Thursday is a former National Guardsman convicted of supporting ISIS.


The alleged Old Dominion attacker, 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, was arrested on July 3, 2016, “for attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.” In 2017, he was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Report: Serial Number ‘Obliterated’ on Gun Used in Old Dominion Attack

A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that the serial number on the gun used in the Old Dominion University shooting was “obliterated.”

This forces investigators “to try to re-surface the number in order to trace the gun” and ascertain how 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh acquired it.

The AP noted that Jalloh had a felony conviction. Breitbart News reported that he was arrested on July 3, 2016, “for attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.” In 2017, he was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

On Thursday, Jalloh entered a classroom and asked if those inside were members of ROTC. He opened fire after they answered in the affirmative.

The FBI pointed out that Jalloh said “Allah Akbar” as the attack commenced.
