We reported on former President Barack Obama's effort this week to pump up his presidential center, which is finally opening in June.

He advertised it on May 4th with "Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill. He also pitched it in an interview with Stephen Colbert.

As we can see from the clip, he's trying to make it a hub for promoting "hope" and "change."

I can't imagine there would be a lot of ordinary folks beating down the doors to visit. As we've noted, the main building is not exactly a beacon of attractiveness. It's just flat-out ugly. They're even selling a pin that's supposed to look like the building, and the pin is similarly ugly. Plus, you have to shell out $30 for the pin, which is just a gray blob of clay.

But it turns out they have other interesting things in the Center store.

Unpaid contractors cloud Obama Center’s finish line

Subcontractors said they’re owed millions as the $850M presidential center prepares to open after years of cost overruns and delays

Contractors on the Obama Presidential Center say their invoices are going unpaid, reportedly missing millions in payments and jeopardizing the future of businesses.

The Obama Center has gone hundreds of millions over its original $300 million cost estimate. The 19-acre museum and library’s construction cost has ballooned over the years to a staggering $850 million, nearly tripling the projected budget.

African American Contractors Association president Omar Shareef said that a total of seven separate subcontractors have contacted him for help with pursuing missing payments in the past several months, according to Crain’s. Some of the contractors are owed seven figures. They’re willing to settle for less, as long as they can keep their businesses running.

“It’s to the point that they wished they had never done (the project),” Shareef told the outlet.

CHICAGO — The Obama Presidential Center was billed as a lasting legacy to former President Barack Obama, and its construction was touted as an ambitious model built with aggressive goals for minority-owned and local businesses.

But now, some of the very subcontractors who helped build the 19.3-acre campus on Chicago’s South Side say they are facing financial ruin as they race to recover millions of dollars they claim remain unpaid ahead of the center's grand opening Friday. Overall construction costs were reported to be $830 million in 2021, and have likely climbed past the $1 billion mark.

A Fox News Digital investigation identified multiple construction firms claiming losses ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to tens of millions. The allegations cut against one of the Center's defining goals: helping minority-owned businesses and local contractors grow through one of Chicago's highest-profile construction projects. Several of the complaints reviewed by Fox News Digital come from firms that were supposed to benefit from that mission.

Among them is Adamson Plumbing, whose owner Mike Owen says is nearly $4 million in the red after years of work on the project.

"That is a hole that no subcontractor, small business can survive," Owen said.

Valerie Jarrett Opens Obama Center Ceremony with Land Acknowledgment

Former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett kicked off the groundbreaking ceremony for the Obama Presidential Center on Thursday with a land acknowledgment, citing the Native American tribes historically rooted to the site.

Jarrett told attendees that organizers wished to “take a moment to recognize the original inhabitants of the land upon which we are gathered today,” listing the Native American tribes historically connected to the site.

“We honor the Anishinaabe, the Council of Three Fires, the Ojibwe, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi Nations,” Jarrett said.

Land acknowledgments have fast become standard practice across universities, government offices, and cultural events. Yet the custom increasingly faces sharp pushback, even from within Native communities. Indigenous scholars and activists frequently dismiss the statements as empty “performative” gestures that offer public relations points for diversity while providing zero tangible benefits or real land back to tribal nations.

After weathering years of lawsuits and local pushback regarding its Jackson Park footprint, the Obama Presidential Center has locked in its debut. A free, three-day community festival from June 19–21 will officially open the doors. The finished complex will serve as a museum, community center, and historical archive dedicated to former President Barack Obama’s two terms in the White House.
