Best-Case vs Worst-Case: How This War Ends Depends on Us

Best-case:

Kurds win their homeland. Iranian Kurdistan becomes free and links up with Iraqi and Syrian Kurds into one solid block. They become the balancing force in the region.

No more jihadi chaos spills out. No more Tehran bullies its neighbors. The jihadi regime in Syria gets weakened. Sistani’s anti-American stance gets cornered. Erdogan’s regional ambitions get pushed back.

The Islamic Republic shrinks. It loses nukes, missiles, and power, but without total collapse. Tehran keeps its Shia core. No vacuum forms.

Baluch and Arabs get their rights back. They gain autonomy and hopefully independence without bloodshed.

Worst-case:

We get too ambitious. We push too far and hit Tehran to the point of total collapse.

IRGC and Basij splinter into militias. Power vacuum forms. Civil war starts. It becomes like Yemen: endless fighting, oil sold on the black market, minorities killing each other. Millions suffer. The region faces instability for years.

Dropping bombs was the easy part. Avoiding civil war, regional instability, and balancing power between ethnic groups is the real work.

#OPINION: China’s propaganda machine went into overdrive as the first U.S. and Israeli missiles started hitting Iranian targets early Saturday. In fact, China’s foreign influence operators started organizing marches in U.S. cities 10 minutes before President Donald Trump announced the operation.

The reaction involved such interest groups with ties to China as the People’s Forum, the ANSWER Coalition, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, CodePink, and, yes, the Democratic Socialists of America (which has begun to co-brand with the PSL), to name only a few. All swung into organizing street mayhem or at least condemning the attacks.

Every country in Asia is running the same clock right now.

They just have very different numbers.

Japan: 254 days. The most prepared nation on earth. Built those reserves after being embargoed in 1973, a humiliation so severe they spent the next 50 years ensuring it could never happen again. Refiners are asking to open them. The government said not yet.

China: approximately 10 days before domestic operations face real constraints. Already halted diesel exports to protect what it has.

India: Gas cuts to industry of 10 to 30% already implemented. Not projected. Implemented. Today.

South Korea: 1.6 million barrels per day through Hormuz. That pipeline is now air.

Japan has three weeks of LNG inventories.

Pakistan: no strategic reserve.
Bangladesh: no strategic reserve.
No buffer. No option. No plan B.

This is the thing the aggregate numbers obscure. When analysts say Asia faces disruption, they are averaging 254 days of Japanese preparedness with zero days of Pakistani preparedness and calling it a regional crisis of moderate concern.

That is not one crisis. That is twelve different crises at twelve different velocities hitting simultaneously.

The countries with reserves will deploy them in sequence, each release sending a price signal that accelerates the clock for the countries beneath them on the buffer ladder. Japan releases. Prices drop temporarily. Then the release ends. Prices resume. South Korea releases. Same pattern. Then India. Then nobody is left with a buffer and the war is still running.

That is the cascade mechanism. And it has a name in energy economics.

It is called strategic reserve depletion under sustained supply shock. The last time it happened at this scale was 1973. That ended with the global recession of 1974 and a complete restructuring of Western energy policy.

Japan built 254 days of reserves because of what happened in 1973.

On day seven of this war, they are already being asked to open them.

The number that should terrify every energy desk in the world is not 254.

It is seven.

🇵🇰🇸🇦Will Pakistan's mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia force it into the Iran war?

Pakistan signed a mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia last September.

Iran has attacked Saudi Arabia multiple times anyway.

Now Pakistan faces a brutal choice: activate the pact and join the war, or admit the treaty is worthless.

Pakistani FM Ishaq Dar reminded Iran about the defense pact. Iran ignored him and kept striking Saudi targets.

Dar is now trying to spin it as a win, claiming Saudi Arabia gets "the least attacks from Iran."

But mutual defense pacts are supposed to deter attacks entirely, not just reduce them.

The reputational cost of not activating the pact is massive for both countries.

Pakistan has 3 reasons to join beyond reputation:

First, it wants to restore its role as the U.S.' top regional partner after India replaced it.

Second, joining could give cover to destroy India's rival port in Chabahar, Iran.

Third, it could facilitate teaming up with the U.S. against the Taliban and getting American troops back to Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan.

If Pakistan joins, Saudi Arabia might lead other Gulf kingdoms that have been hit by Iran into battle as part of a larger U.S.-coordinated escalation.

The stakes are high enough that Pakistan's involvement in the war can't be ruled out.

US Central Command officials have confirmed to American media that yesterday in southwestern Iran, U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was likely shot down by Iranian air defense systems.

The pilots managed to safely eject over Iranian territory, after which a joint US-Israeli evacuation team successfully entered Iran and carried out the extraction of the pilots.

The HMS Dragon destroyer is still sitting in Portsmouth.

It won't be ready to sail until next week, then needs another week to reach Cyprus.

The proposal to send it only hit the chief of defense staff's desk Tuesday morning, 4 days after the war started.

Cyprus had to call France for help instead.

The Cypriot high commissioner said Cyprus is "disappointed" in the UK government.

Middle Eastern allies are furious about Britain's delays in letting the U.S. use its bases.

A former minister says the UAE, Kuwait, and even Canada are asking "What the f*ck are you doing?"

Britain eventually deployed jets and gave missile interceptors to allies.

But the damage from the dithering might be impossible to recover from.

Iran reportedly has tens of thousands of Shaheds stockpiled, so this is not slowing down.
