If the air campaign intensifies, maintenance, supply, and support needs intensify, too. That means more people.
Otherwise, something gets missed, and our pilots, aircrew, and even our bases and vessels may be put at greater risk.

Changing weapons platforms means more people, too. A B-52 requires between 53 and 62 man hours per flight hour, and the B-1 and B-2 require close to 100. The more gee whiz stuff you have, the more systems to maintain. BUFFs are relatively simple bomb trucks compared to the Bone and the Spirit.

Okay ... 50,000 US troops are needed on the ground for systems maintenance, not battle.   I know very little about this side of war and can only pray you're right.

Exact breakdowns for "actual combat troops" (often meaning ground combat units like Army/Marine infantry) are not publicly detailed in current reports.

When I was in Vietnam, almost sixty years ago now, for every point of the spear type (Sneaky Pete) there were at least twenty technical and logistical support people (me) there. That was then. I hate to guess how many it takes now.

That is not what that means. It means the targets in the heavily populated areas have been hit with precision bombs and the facilities out in the open can now be bombed to oblivion with less precise weapons.

Just start processing all suspected sites with UAV-based precision ground penetrating radar.  Almost certainly those little trap spider boxes will have a very distinctive signature on GPR.

A lot of support personnel are doing things all over the world which are never known or acknowledged. When people ask me which campaign were you in? The only answer is, 'all of them'. I did the stuff I did in war and in peace alike, all in support of the military. And nobody ever knew.

So yes. Support personnel are the foundation of the 11bang bang combat troops.

No, they are not, and for good reason. Every Marine a rifleman, and all that. I was just addressing the logistical needs of air units.

Satellites above can see where every launch comes from. Mobile ones can move between launches. These cannot.

IIRC, a "JDAM kit" attaches to a "dumb" bomb and makes it a guided bomb. Not knowing it Bomb IQ, I don't know whether it's Genius, Smart, or almost smarter than .

Hearing reports it is Iranian Kurds that have bases in Iraq who are launching a campaign and not Iraqi Kurds. You can tell by the groovy arm patches.

Fox News’ Jen Griffin is reporting that Kurdish forces have launched a ground offensive against Iranian regime forces in the country’s northwest, a region home to a sizable Kurdish population.

“Thousands of Iraqi Kurds have launched a ground offensive in Iran,” Griffin reported at 4:13 p.m. Eastern Time, citing an unnamed U.S. official. Barak Ravid, the senior foreign affairs correspondent, further confirmed that Iranian Kurdish forces had launched attacks within Iranian territory.

Involvement of Iraqi Kurds has been disputed as of this report. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the leading political party in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, has denied involvement in any ground operation or the broader US-Israel war against Iran.

Several media outlets, including CNN and Reuters, had reported that discussions between U.S. officials and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups regarding the possibility of a limited ground operation into western Iran. The discussions had reportedly been taking place over several months, though the reports have surfaced in the wake of ongoing U.S. and Israeli combat operations against Iran, which have led to retaliatory attacks throughout the region.

Sources familiar with the planning described the talks as exploratory, with focus placed on whether and how armed Kurdish groups could engage Iranian security forces in border areas.

Here’s what I’m understanding about the Kurdish ground movement reports in southwestern Iran.

So far it appears limited to small scale clashes along the border. Kurdish forces are positioning and preparing.

At the same time, U.S. and Israeli officials are running heavy information warfare, likely to confuse and stretch the heII out of the IRGC.

Kurdish sources are again dismissing claims of an offensive to regional news outlets. Reporting surrounding the ostensible offensive is currently murky and may be more of an information operation than a kinetic one.

It's the Iranian Kurds. Not Iraqi Kurds. They were already getting attacked by the IRGC. They're simply fighting back.
