A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent shot and wounded an armed individual near the U.S.-Canada border in northern New Hampshire early Sunday, authorities said.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott said the agent returned fire during the encounter in Pittsburg, a small town along the Canadian frontier. The agent struck the person, who has not been publicly identified. The individual was transported to a nearby hospital, and their condition was not immediately known.
“The FBI Boston Field Office will be investigating the incident. CBP is cooperating fully with investigators. For more information, we refer you to the FBI,” Scott told WMUR.
The FBI said the shooting occurred at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday. According to a preliminary assessment, the individual opened fire on the CBP agent, who then returned fire. The bureau’s Evidence Response Team was deployed to process the scene.
No additional details about the border incident were released, including what led to the confrontation.
The violence unfolded just hours before a separate deadly security breach at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, officials said.
