More than a dozen Democratic members of Congress are reportedly expected to skip President Donald Trump's annual State of the Union address next week to attend counterprograms, including an event on the National Mall.

The president is set to give the annual address to Congress on Tuesday, Feb. 24, which is a televised speech delivered at the Capitol, which is open to all lawmakers from both chambers and their guests.

The largest event that will serve as a "counterprogam" to Trump's speech will be hosted by progressive groups MoveOn and MeidasTouch. Dubbed the "People’s State of the Union," the rally will take place on the National Mall at 8:30 p.m.

The event will feature a dozen Democratic senators and lawmakers along with “everyday Americans most impacted by Trump’s dangerous agenda,” according to a MoveOn press release.

Speakers include Democratic Sens. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Chris Murphy of Connecticut, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.

Democratic House lawmakers include Reps. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Delia Ramirez of Illinois, Greg Casar of Texas and Becca Balint of Vermont, among others.

Another half dozen Democrats are scheduled to attend an event at the National Press Club titled “State of the Swamp.” The lawmakers include Reps. Eric Swalwell of California, Jason Crow of Colorado, Dan Goldman of New York, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts and Eugene Vindman of Virginia. Democratic Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden will also be there.

De Niro heads up all-star lineup of Dems, leftist cranks for Trump SOTU rebuttal
February 19, 2026 | Chris Donaldson

Democrats and their allies are pulling out all the stops for the annual State of the Union address with protests and propaganda aplenty, including deploying foul-mouthed Hollywood legend Robert De Niro to rebut President Donald J. Trump’s message to America.

The Trump-hating octogenarian human f-bomb machine is among those who will be featured at the “State of the Swamp” event counterprogramming Trump’s address, which will be delivered on Tuesday, February 24, before a joint session of Congress, a high-stakes speech in a critical election year.

Sponsored by the group Defiance.org, the “State of the Swamp” will trot out dozens of speakers at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to assail Trump and his policies, a veritable all-star collection of leftist cranks, including sitting Democrat members of Congress, activists, media personalities, and celebrities.

It's amusing that they think it's such a tough guy act of rebellion not to watch the SOTU on TV. I haven't watched one in decades, and it has nothing to do with my opinion of whichever president is delivering it. I just don't like to sit there and watch a lengthy speech.

I used to not watch them either. I did watch Trump's first SOTU speech when Nancy crumpled up a copy of the speech and threw a hissy fit...it really was a great speech.

According to one estimate, only 300 GB out of 15 TB (or two percent) of the data.  Of the files released, they have redacted a ton of information and not provided explanations.  And they won't say how many files are withheld and deemed privileged due to ongoing investigations.

Not completely. Trump wants to protect "his friends".
