Florida attorney general issues criminal subpoena after Jacksonville official’s immigration comments

— Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Monday that the Office of Statewide Prosecution had issued a criminal subpoena to Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan’s administration, following controversial comments by a city employee who publicly discouraged cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

In a post on X, Uthmeier revealed that the subpoena targeted the Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Yanira Cardona, whose recent actions prompted an investigation into whether the Jacksonville city administration had coordinated efforts to undermine federal immigration enforcement.

“If there’s evidence that [Deegan’s] administration coordinated to impede immigration enforcement and harbor criminal aliens, we will hold them accountable!” Uthmeier wrote.

Cardona, who works in the city’s outreach to the Hispanic community, stirred controversy after posting a live video on Instagram in which she warned her followers about ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, operations in the city.

In the video, which was filmed in her city office during work hours, Cardona shared details of alleged ICE activity in Jacksonville, describing it as harassment. She suggested that immigrants should stock up on legal resources, grant power of attorney to trusted contacts, and cooperate with law enforcement only if directly confronted.

At a separate press conference on Monday, Uthmeier addressed the issue, stating:

“We have a situation here where a city official was out there publicly alerting people to ICE locations, interfering with immigration enforcement efforts. This is the state of Florida. It’s not Minnesota.”............

Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
