A prediction market company best known for allowing users to bet on world events is stepping into New York City’s food scene — if only briefly — with the launch of what it’s calling the city’s first-ever free grocery store.

Polymarket will be open for New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan starting at 12PM from Feb. 12 through Feb. 16, according to the NYC for Free website. It’s being described as the city’s first free grocery store, "fully stocked" and requiring no purchase.

Polymarket posted on X, Tuesday, that the idea took "months of planning." In addition to paying for the lease, the company said it had donated $1 million to Food Bank For New York City to support "an organization that changes how our city responds to hunger."

What are the rules?

How will they pay people to work there restocking shelves and with what if they’re generating no revenue?

Polymarket will take the loss, this is all about brand promotion - a lot of people have never heard about Polymarket before, and don't know what it's about ("betting on anything"), so this is a good way to get wide publicity at a small cost

Especially if it descends into theft and violence, they get their name in the news!!

This has been tried several times and it always, Always, ALWAYS, fails. The violence is usually not against the store. The violence is between the customers to each other. They fight each other over this or that thing. They rob each other in the store and in the parking lot. It always devolves into violence and chaos. There is no such thing as 'civility' in an everything is free store.

A free grocery store is, as the name itself says, a "free for all" store. Don't go in there unless you are ready to fight for what you get, or someone will take it from you.
It is the exact opposite of a nice and kind mom and pop store.
