Nancy Guthrie's home one hour from Border Patrol checkpoint near Mexican border

The missing 84-year-old mother of NBC's "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie lives only one hour north of a Border Patrol checkpoint close to the U.S. border with Mexico.

Just over 50 miles south of Nancy Guthrie's home in the swanky Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, and nearly due south on I-19, lies the Border Patrol checkpoint in the desert town of Tubac.

The checkpoint is in the northbound lane. Southbound traffic moves unimpeded.

Only 25 miles south of that, the United States is separated from the Mexican state of Sonora by an official Border Patrol port of entry in the town of Nogales.

The Sinaloa Cartel holds significant control and influence over Sonora.

From what I have read, she is on heart medication and has a pacemaker.  So -- time is limited; she needs her meds, otherwise things may not turn out so well.

My thought as well.

Catfish speculates:
"Pure speculation, but since her house is only an hour from the border, maybe some illegal or cartel member did it."

I'll agree with that.
And add that -- if they don't locate her and get her back within the next 2-3 days -- she won't be coming back.

That's the way the gangs play...

(hopefully I'll be proven wrong)
The gangs going after an 80 year old lady in poor health?  Why?  If they wanted a ransom it doesn't appear they were very clear about it, it seems.  Did we ever hear if items were stolen?  To me this all just seems too personal.  I'm still thinking a disgruntled family member.

Nancy Guthríe is 84 years old with a bad heart and seriously limited mobility.  This is her home:

Are we to believe Nancy lives here ⬆️ without a staff?   Housekeeper?  Groundskeeper?  Who cooks her meals?   Who takes out the trash?

Is there any assistance, at all?  What kind and from who?

It's never cartels. Every crime from Jared Loutner to the Ohio family murders was the supposed work of the cartels, at least initially. I don't think they shit where they eat, basically.

Usually they acquire 'neighborhood immunity' by maintaining a low profile where they can, keeping things quiet, and keeping their immediate environs 'safe'.

Agreed. A gang that's cold blooded enough to kidnap an old lady would not have any qualms about stealing her purse and then demanding that she give up her ATM PIN so the gang could get some easy cash. Valuables would have also been stolen from the house.

I am therefore leaning towards a family member.

I would be surprised if this is the work of the cartels with President Trump looking for a reason to take them down. A rogue cartel member?  Mmmm, maybe, but I doubt it. I tend to think it is:
— Act of vengeance, or
— A money beef @Smokin Joe, or
— An act of simple opportunity, or
— The Clintons @MeganC

Alleged ‘Ransom Note’ Contains Chilling Hint About Nancy Guthrie’s Potential Location

Published 18 minutes ago

on February 6, 2026

By Chris Powell

A ransom note tied to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie may offer investigators their clearest indication yet of where the 84-year-old grandmother could be held. The letter, which was sent to TMZ earlier this week, reportedly contains details suggesting Guthrie may no longer be in Tucson, Arizona, where authorities believe she was forcibly taken from her home late last month.

While investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of the note, federal authorities and the family have publicly acknowledged its existence. The alleged ransom letter includes a demand for millions of dollars in bitcoin in exchange for Guthrie’s safe return.

Crucially, the letter also references a specific timeframe for how long it would take to return her to Tucson once payment is made, a detail that could significantly narrow the scope of the search. TMZ reported that the timeline outlined in the letter appears to assume Guthrie would be driven back rather than flown, noting that air travel would require Real ID verification and likely expose the captors.

Factoring in reasonable driving speeds and the stated timeframe, analysts suggested investigators could draw a rough radius around Tucson to determine where Guthrie might be held. That potential radius spans a wide swath of the western and central United States, including Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of Kansas and Oklahoma.

Portions of northern Mexico could also fall within that range, though crossing international borders would introduce additional complications and risks. Despite the size of the possible search area, the report noted that even a broad geographic framework could be valuable to law enforcement as the investigation intensifies.

NEW: Key Clue At Nancy Guthrie’s Home Reveals Kidnappers’ ‘Sinister Test’

Published 1 hour ago

on February 6, 2026

Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapper may have deliberately ripped out her doorbell camera to see if police would show up, NBC’s top crime correspondent suggested Friday.

The 84-year-old grandmother, whose daughter is “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her $1 million Tucson, Arizona, home last weekend. Authorities believe she was taken against her will.

Data show Guthrie’s doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. Sunday, a moment NBC National Law Enforcement & Intelligence Correspondent Tom Winter called “critical” to the case.

Roughly 25 minutes later, at 2:12 a.m., software logged motion at the home. Police acknowledge the movement could have been caused by a person or an animal. Because Guthrie did not have an active subscription with the doorbell service, the company was unable to retrieve any video footage.

At 2:28 a.m., Guthrie’s pacemaker app disconnected from her phone. Winter said that timing suggests she was away from both her home and her phone sometime before then.

“What’s with that 20-minute time gap?” Winter asked on the “Today” show Friday morning. “The camera gets ripped off the doorbell, but then there’s motion seen on the camera outside, you know, 20 minutes later. What’s that about?”

I'm hoping she's still in Tuscon and LEO is closing in on the abductor(s) and the map is just to throw them off. (Perhaps I've watched too many movies)?

Yes, that is pretty low,  but likely the app would have given her whereabouts.  So, again it leads me to believe it is either a close relative or friend who knew her routine and daily habits.

I think the pacemaker was just out of bluetooth range from the phone, or the phone battery died.

That just means it’s out of range. The phone and the PM must remain within X feet of one another. Mrs. G has one.

That being said, the PM is monitored by a lab, independent of her phone. That may give some way to locate it…?

That makes me think that she is dead.

That sounds as if the doorbell camera was removed on the way in, and the motion detected on the way out. That would mean the path taken going in would avoid setting off the motion detector.
