Muslim federation cuts ties with CAIR Florida after attorney general warns city of state’s ‘terrorist’ designationCORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — The South Florida Muslim Federation announced Monday it has disassociated from the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR-FL, citing an “abundance of caution” following a state-level terrorist designation.
The move follows an executive order issued by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Dec. 8, 2025, which designated CAIR-FL as a “foreign terrorist organization” under Florida law. State Attorney General James Uthmeier issued a warning to Coral Springs officials on Friday, stating that public resources could not be used by any group affiliated with CAIR due to this designation.
The South Florida Muslim Federation, or SFMF, an umbrella group representing over 30 regional organizations, quietly removed CAIR-FL from its online member list ahead of its annual Florida Muslim Conference scheduled for Jan. 30–31 at the city-owned Coral Springs Center for the Arts.
In a statement, the Federation maintained its support for the civil rights group while acknowledging the legal climate:
Longstanding ties: CAIR-FL has been a member of SFMF since the federation’s inception.
Conduct record: The SFMF stated it has “never observed any conduct on the part of CAIR-FL that would remotely resemble terrorism,” Coral Springs Talk reported.
Judicial review: The federation noted that it is awaiting guidance from federal courts as CAIR-FL challenges the governor’s order in court.
The controversy emerged as Jewish residents urged the Coral Springs City Commission not to host the conference, alleging that some scheduled speakers promote antisemitic views. Despite these concerns, city officials stated the First Amendment legally binds them to provide access to the facility on a content-neutral basis..............
