Ukrainian drones struck a major oil refinery in the city of Omsk in western Siberia, in what appears to be one of Kyiv’s deepest attacks on Russian territory since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s military general staff said Monday that the strike caused a fire at the facility, which is situated nearly 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) from Ukrainian territory and close to Russia’s border with Kazakhstan.

The attack, which was confirmed by local Russian officials, provides further evidence of Kyiv’s enhanced long-range drone capabilities and comes on the eve of a crunch NATO summit. Heads of state from 32 countries are expected in Turkey’s capital from Tuesday for the two-day conference.

“Today, our long-range sanctions reached the oil refinery in Omsk – nearly 2,500 kilometres from Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his daily evening address, according to a translation.

“Upgraded Fire Point drones have put Siberia within reach of Ukrainian precision. This is a significant blow to Russia’s oil economy and an important achievement for the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

The United States will buy drones from Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump said this during a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, European Pravda reported.

Trump responded to questions from media representatives about the current status of the bilateral agreement on unmanned technologies between Ukraine and the United States.

The US President confirmed his intentions regarding future purchases of drone platforms and praised Ukraine’s capabilities in this field.

According to the EP he said that the US will buy Ukrainian drones. “We make great drones, but they have the ability to produce them in very large quantities, which is extremely impressive. It’s amazing that they produce them in war conditions,” Donald Trump added.

In May, the governments of the United States and Ukraine prepared a draft memorandum outlining the terms of a potential new defense agreement between the two countries.

Combined with strikes on other electronics manufacturers over the past five months, a clear pattern has emerged: dismantling the supply chain that supports Russia’s missile production.

This spring, Ukraine began implementing a new strategy: targeting the factories that manufacture electronic components for Russian missiles.

- In early March, Storm Shadow missiles struck the Kremniy EL plant in Bryansk, where components for Russian missiles were produced.

- In mid-May, another strike hit Zelenograd in Russia’s Moscow region, home to a significant share of the country’s defense research and manufacturing base.

- Then, on June 12, Ukraine struck VNIIR-Progress in Cheboksary, a facility that manufactures CRPA antennas used in Shahed drones, Iskander missiles, and guided aerial bombs (KABs). This is a critical component because it enables these weapons to maintain navigation even in the presence of electronic warfare interference.

Each of these strikes followed the same logic: rather than trying to intercept every missile already in flight, reduce the number of missiles that can be launched—and degrade their effectiveness. This is especially important when it comes to ballistic weapons. Ukraine does not have enough interceptor missiles for its Patriot air defense systems to counter Russian Iskander and other ballistic missiles.

According to two sources, Ukraine’s recent long-range drone strikes on Russian oil refineries, ports, and fuel infrastructure have strengthened Putin’s resolve rather than pushing him toward negotiations.

One source who regularly meets Putin said he had “dug in his heels” to achieve his key objective of capturing the remainder of Ukraine’s Donbas region.

The same source told Reuters that Putin recently rebuked a group of advisers who suggested freezing the conflict along the current front line as the basis for a ceasefire.

Another source said Putin believes Russian forces will eventually seize the rest of Donbas and is therefore unwilling to compromise.

The sources added that there is a “high probability” that Russia will escalate the war in the coming months rather than move toward peace negotiations.

Their comments contradict recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who said after speaking with both Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky that ending the war was “closer than people realize.”

Responding to Reuters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted Russia remained open to a peaceful settlement but said Moscow had “enough capability to act independently and continue the special military operation,”  .  .  .

Russian troops abandoned a working T-72 tank on the battlefield during a retreat after it simply ran out of fuel, Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces reported on July 9.

The trophy tank was captured by soldiers of the 81st Separate Airmobile Slobozhanska Brigade without a single shot being fired.

According to Ukrainian paratroopers, the Russian crew fled the combat vehicle after it stalled while they were trying to escape a Ukrainian advance.
