🇵🇱 16 years since the Smolensk Air Disaster

On April 10th, 2010, the Polish presidential plane crashed near Smolensk North Airport, killing all 96 people on board.

Among them was the President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, along with his wife, the Chief of the General Staff, along with the heads of all branches of the Polish Armed Forces, senior government officials, members of parliament, and key figures of Poland’s political and intellectual elite.

They were on their way to commemorate the victims of the 1940 Katyn massacre in which 22 000 Polish officers were murdered by Soviet secret police.

The shock reshaped Polish politics for years. It deepened internal divisions, fueled distrust toward Russia, and became a defining trauma in modern Polish history.

The official investigation concluded the crash was caused by pilot error and poor weather conditions.

But the story didn’t end there.

Alternative investigations, backed by parts of the Polish political establishment, argued that the crash may not have been accidental, pointing to possible involvement of Russian special services.

What further fueled suspicion is that several individuals connected to the investigation or re-investigation later died under unclear or controversial circumstances.

For example:

- Remigiusz Muś — a technician who was among the first witnesses to events at Smolensk, was found dead in 2012 in what was officially ruled a suicide.

- Sławomir Petelicki — the first commander of the famous Polish special forces unit GROM, who had criticized aspects of the investigation, died in 2012 from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Until this day, the Russian authorities haven't returned the wreckage despite Polish demands.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton said the updated iteration of what was called the Government War Book would require people to think differently about resilience, drawing on lessons from the Cold War but "in a modern context, with a modern society, with modern infrastructure".

In an interview on Friday at the London Defence Conference, he also revealed that a threat by the UK to seize ships that are part of Russia's murky "shadow fleet" is already having an effect, even though British forces have yet to board any vessels.

The chief of the defence staff said the mere knowledge that London was ready to target a sanctioned tanker was forcing Moscow to escort them or divert them away from UK waters.  .  .  .

The Russian joint-stock company Kronstadt, one of the key manufacturers of military drones, including the Orion, is on the brink of bankruptcy.

This was reported by The Moscow Times, citing CNews.

This situation is attributed to losses and debts resulting from international sanctions and expensive loans.

In late March, SKB Elektronnogo Priborostroeniya LLC filed a lawsuit to declare the company bankrupt due to its failure to comply with a court order to collect a debt.

As of the end of 2025, the losses of the company’s owner — DK Kronstadt LLC — amounted to 4.6 billion rubles.

Over the past year, 154 lawsuits have been filed against the drone manufacturer for a total amount of 2.6 billion rubles.

All claims relate to improper fulfillment of obligations under supply contracts. Among the plaintiffs are a number of enterprises in the Russian defense industry, including Akvamash, Electromashinostroitelny Zavod, and the Arsenal semiconductor device plant.

Similar claims against the company began pouring in last summer. By August 2025, 40 lawsuits had been filed against Kronstadt for a total of 626.3 million rubles.

Prior to this, in August 2023, the Russian drone manufacturer had already been targeted for bankruptcy by the company Turboget Micro.

The manufacturer itself attributes its losses to provisions for financial investments and high interest rates on loans, which are linked to the imposition of international sanctions due to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Additionally, market experts attribute the pre-bankruptcy situation to the loss of a strategic investor in 2022.  .  .  .

WASHINGTON, April 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is likely to extend as soon as Friday a waiver allowing ‌countries to buy some sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The U.S. Treasury Department has allowed purchases of Russian oil and products at sea since mid-March with a 30-day waiver that expires on April 11, part of efforts to control global energy prices during ​the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

Russia's presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev had said the original waiver would free 100 million barrels of ​Russian crude, equal to almost a day's worth of global output.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met ⁠with Trump in the White House on Thursday to talk about extending the waiver, and they agreed it was a good ​idea, one of the sources said, asking not to be named.

The video shows stricken Russian soldiers desperately trying to fend off approaching drones, throwing sticks and swatting at them in a futile bid to survive.

The grim scenes emerged as both sides begin a tense 32-hour truce to mark Easter in the Orthodox calendar.

Russia's hardline foreign minister issued a surprise statement that 'the prospect of a political and diplomatic settlement is on the horizon.'

Vladimir Putin's 76-year-old top diplomat laced this with his usual invective against the West - in particular the EU - but appeared to concede that an end to the bloody four year conflict could be in sight.

At the same time, Ukraine's top negotiator Lt-Gen Kyrylo Budanov, 40, made clear Russia is shifting its stance.

'They all understand the war needs to end. That's why they are negotiating,' he told Bloomberg.

'I don't think it will be long.'

Budanov - former head of Ukraine's GUR military intelligence - said Russia was moving to an endgame because the 'trillions' it has spend on the conflict was taking its toll.
