When military recruiters arrived at the Lunin College of Transport Technologies in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk last month, they hoped they would find students willing to enlist as drone operators — but few took up the offer.

College president Maria Kirsanova fumed that she had expected “her kids” — around 400 students over the age of 18 — to be “the first to go and defend their Fatherland.”

“Who put the fear into you? Who will protect us?” she asked at a meeting with students, which was recorded by one of the attendees and published online.

“Are you all cowards here sitting and being scared for your lives?” she said, scolding students for what she called a fear of returning home “in zinc coffins.”

Russia has increasingly turned to universities as a fresh source of recruits for its four-year war in Ukraine as enlistment numbers dwindle and war casualties soar into the hundreds of thousands.

While Russia’s mass army sign-up campaign with promises of high pay started shortly after the full-scale invasion in 2022, efforts targeting students in particular have intensified since January, said Idite Lesom (“Get Lost”), an NGO that helps Russians avoid conscription.

The timing of these campaigns is tied to the academic calendar. Military recruiters often use the winter exam season to target students, especially those with low grades or retakes, Idite Lesom spokesperson Ivan Chuviliaev told The Moscow Times.

I posted the above because the indicators such as lack of young men to recruit would lead me to think Russia's population crisis is worse than they've been letting on.

The outlet reports that the incidents involved units such as the 1445th Motor Rifle Regiment near Tokmak, the 189th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion near Kreminna, and the 32nd Separate Rifle Battalion near Sevsk. Losses varied by location, with both fatalities and injuries recorded following the use of the equipment.

According to Militarnyi, the fiber-optic spools were reportedly delivered in small batches, typically four units at a time. Can Russia last another 10 to 15 years? I doubt it.

At some point the Ukrainians will be forced to take the ground war to Moscow if that is the price for peace.

High quality satellite pictures obtained by TG channel Dnipro Osint show the damage at the oil terminal in Ust Luga, Russia.

One oil loading dock was completely destroyed (Picture #2). Another one was heavily damaged (Picture #4). The Ukrainian UAVs were precisely hitting the most vulnerable parts of an oil terminal.

Furthermore, some oil tanks show scorch marks.

Why would Ukraine take a much longer route that crosses four different countries, any of whose already alerted air defenses could have shot down the drones. There is a much shorter and more direct path from NE Ukraine straight to the oil terminal. Further, there is at least one Pantsir SAM system, that did not fire its missiles, within a few kilometers of the oil storage, so, yeah, Ukraine would not have routed their drones to avoid ineffective Russian SAM systems.

What the overhead satellite images can't show is whether other tanks are significantly damaged, and also probably lack the resolution to show damage to piping interconnecting the tanks and pipelines out of storage to the ship loading areas.
