A jury returned a not guilty verdict Wednesday evening in the trial of former Uvalde school police officer Adrian Gonzales, charged with 29 counts of child abandonment or endangerment tied to the May 24, 2022 Robb Elementary shooting.

The jury deliberated for only 7 hours before returning the verdict.

Gonzales faced charges tied to the early minutes of the Robb Elementary attack. Nineteen children and two adults died in the shooting, which is the deadliest in Texas history according to the Texas Tribune.

His counsel brought up two witnesses to stand in his defense, Gonzales did not take the stand.

Former Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo was also criminally charged in relation to the 2022 shooting.

The Associated Press contributed to this reporting.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Wish I could find a link to the story but the sniper in  Austin, Texas in the 1960s was stopped by 3 guys, one a police officer who acted on their own to end the mayhem. One was Air Force vet (IIRC) and they acted as their own SWAT team rushing in to neutralize the threat....

R. Lee Ermey's character mentioned him in Full Metal Jacket, too

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I had done what he did.

I lived in Austin during this incident and Whitman lived about a mile from my house.  My brother was on campus during it.  One of the guys at my high school was riding his bike down Guadalupe St and Whitman shot him in the leg.  He even shot a pregnant woman in the stomach, killing both her and the child.  The guy was a true marksman.

He was stopped by a cop who emptied his .38 into him and finally a shotgun blast to the head.  A friend of my dad.

Maybe he can't. I don't know. Hopefully he will find some way to redeem himself. Really, you don't know how you are going to react until the sh*t hits the fan. Some do well, some do not.

Had gunfire around me on several occasions. Reacted differently each time. The first time I ran like a little girl, but I was not responsible for anyone except myself that time. The other two times I made sure those around me were covered.

And some do well one time and not the next. I just know that I couldn't live with myself knowing that I had let a bunch of kids die.

Me, neither. Never had to deal with gunfire much, but I have been in a few burning buildings in my Fireman days. Kids, especially, you search for. (You take out anyone there, but kids hide under beds and in closets and such...)

All this is true.  pointing-up I think we all know what we think we would do. And hopefully do. But the man will live with this his whole life. Not a position I would relish.
