Denmark isn't going to budge and Greenland has made a choice.  I think Trump has delusions of grandeur on this issue.  (Yes I get this is CNBC reporting ...)

Greenland’s PM has a blunt message for Trump: ‘We choose Denmark’ over the U.S.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Tuesday that the Arctic island chooses Denmark over the U.S., pushing back against Donald Trump’s repeated takeover threats.

“If we have to choose between the USA and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO, the Kingdom of Denmark and the EU,” Nielsen said, according to translated comments reported by Danish public broadcaster DR.

He was speaking alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at a news conference in Copenhagen, ahead of crunch talks between U.S., Danish and Greenlandic officials at the White House on Wednesday...........

About half of Greenland’s budget is covered by Denmark.  They should have sold it to Truman for fifty cents.  But neither Greenland nor Denmark are willing to budge, and straining relations with NATO isn’t helping anyone.

How so?

It is only recently that the NATO nations have begun to expand their defense industries and commit more to their defense budgets. The NATO nations have shown time and again they can't be counted on in a real crisis. The most recent example of this is their continued purchase of Russian oil even though they claim Russia posses an existential threat to them.

Pres. Trump has correctly identified that our priority should be in our hemisphere and Greenland is critical in that context. It is a key point for identifying, tracking and even destroying Russian submarines.

The days of Europe being a linchpin in our foreign policy decisions is ending and all the posturing by these limp wristed "elites" really doesn't matter.

Who said Greenland has a choice?

The Vikings didn't give the native Inuit peoples a choice when they stole it for themselves.

Threatening to invade a NATO ally will strain relations with that ally. Duh.

Exactly, which is why I don't ever see us invading and taking it by force.

Why does Trump think he can just swoop in and take Greenland  -- they are a territory of Denmark.  I don't see Denmark giving up that territory; it would be unwise and the Danish gov't has repeatedly stated Greenland is not for sale.

The U.S. taking Greenland by force would be equally unwise.

That's why I don't think we'll do that.

The Danes would be happy if America reopened bases in Greenland.  They are cooperative, and they sent a lot of troops to Afghanistan.  I don’t know why they want to keep Greenland.  Maybe for resource extraction 100 years down the line.  Maybe they aren’t too sure America will be around by then.

Especially a state with only 57,000ish residences???

The only reason they want to keep it is because Pres. Trump has said it's critical for our national defense. They didn't like it when another strong POTUS said we wanted the Virgin Islands, but in the end they sold them to the USA. History does repeat.

It makes no sense to open bases in a critical location in our hemisphere that another country can insist we close, or worse allow our adversaries to also open bases there as well. If you think our European allies aren't capable of double dealing you should follow the news more closely.
