The mention 7 brands -- why don't they list the brands of formula???
Florida first state to test infant formula; heavy metals found in many samples Gov. Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis announced Friday that Florida has become the first state in the nation to launch an independent testing initiative for infant formula, after state-commissioned lab results revealed that more than 60% of tested samples contained heavy metals exceeding federal safety benchmarks.
The Florida Department of Health recently collected 24 infant formula samples from seven different brands, purchased across multiple retail and online locations. According to the first lady, the results from certified laboratory testing were “troubling”:
Systemic contamination: 16 of the 24 formulas tested contained at least one heavy metal—arsenic, cadmium, lead, or mercury—above federal standards.
Mercury prevalence: Mercury was the most frequent contaminant, exceeding benchmarks in 16 of the formulas.
High-risk products: Six specific formulas showed elevated metal levels in every single sample purchased from different locations, suggesting “systemic problems in sourcing or manufacturing” rather than isolated shipment issues.
Other metals: Arsenic exceeded benchmarks in five formulas, cadmium in three, and lead in two.
A “force multiplier” for accountability
While infant formula is federally regulated, Florida officials argued that current oversight is insufficient. The first lady noted that while manufacturers are required by law to test for microbes like Salmonella, there is no equivalent federal mandate for consistent chemical and heavy metal testing before products reach shelves.
“Florida now is the first state in the nation stepping into the fold as a major force multiplier to test, to keep testing, to ensure that these chemicals do not exceed federal standards,” she said.............
