Venezuela President Gustavo Petro on Saturday (Jan 3) took to X to alert the world that his nation was under attack. In an alarming post, Petro said, “Right now they are bombing Caracas. Alert to the whole world, they have attacked Venezuela.” He added that the Venezuelan capital was facing “bombing with missiles,” while urging the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States (OAS) to “meet immediately.” However, he did not identify who “they” were. His post comes as at least seven loud explosions were heard in the Venezuelan capital.

He informed me that Nicolás Maduro has been arrested by U.S. personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States, and that the kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant

This action likely falls within the president’s inherent authority under Article II of the Constitution to protect U.S. personnel from an actual or imminent attack

Not the news I was expected to wake up to see this morning.

And although I know this is a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, IF Trump is telling the truth (which is unfortunately pretty rare), pulling this operation off in one night when it took George W. Bush nine months to depose Saddam and never fully did get rid of the Taliban... well, that's impressive.

VICTORY: Democrats have been caught supporting a criminal dictator. The US liberated the Venezuelan people from an illegitimate communist dictator who was indicted in New York five years ago. Maduro was a fugitive from justice. Last night’s arrest wasn’t a war.  Trump could risk telling Gallego in advance as he would have warned the regime.

President Trump called the US military operation that captured the country’s leader Nicolas Maduro “brilliant” in an interview with the New York Times.

“A lot of good planning and a lot of great, great troops and people,” Trump told the publication in a 50 second phone interview just hours after the strikes in Venezuela Saturday. “It was a brilliant operation, actually.”

When asked by the Times if he had sought congressional authority prior to the strike, Trump said “we’ll discuss that.”

Trump announced in an early morning TruthSocial post that the US had “successfully carried out a large scale strike” against Venezuela and Maduro, and that the leader and his wife had been flown out of the country.

“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow,” Trump wrote, adding that there will be a news conference at 11am from Mar-a-Lago.

The president offered multiple off ramps, but was very clear throughout this process: the drug trafficking must stop, and the stolen oil must be returned to the United States. Maduro is the newest person to find out that President Trump means what he says.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Saturday morning that Venezuela’s socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been “captured and flown out of the country”, a message that came after a series of explosions hit Caracas.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country. This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement,” President Trump said in a Truth Social statement. He added that further details would follow at a press conference to be hosted later today at Mar-a-Lago.

President Trump’s bulletin comes hours after a series of apparent airstrikes hit several locations across the capital city of Caracas and other regions of Venezuela.

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a copy of Trump’s Truth Social post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The White House is confirming U.S. military operations in Venezuela tonight. Let us be clear: these strikes are illegal. The President does not have the authority to declare war or undertake large-scale military operations without Congress. Congress must act to rein him in. Immediately.

Democrats who would react to the news of U.S. military action in Venezuela with condemnation and calls for impeachment were headed off at the pass by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who detailed why the strikes did not require congressional authorization.

In a bold move by President Donald J. Trump, military forces carried out a “large-scale strike” on Caracas early Saturday morning, capturing dictator and alleged drug cartel kingpin Nicolás Maduro, who will be put on trial for his crimes.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country. This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement,” Trump announced in a post to Truth Social.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) spoke with Rubio after the strikes and said that he was assured by the nation’s top diplomat that the action to take Maduro into custody was within Trump’s constitutional authority.

This sounds more like an internal Venezuelan operation than a US one.  Surely the US added intel but there is nothing yet that says they actually provided military assistance.  Even "airstrikes" are presumed and may have been Venezuelan military bombings.  An internal resistance would have lots of weapons available since Maduro had them on high alert for a US attack.

Democratic lawmakers railed against President Donald Trump’s overnight military operation in Venezuela on Saturday that resulted in the successful capture and indictment of socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

Congressional Democrats argued Trump lacked legal authority and that it was counter to American interests to use military force against Maduro’s regime. Republican lawmakers largely praised Trump’s military operation with those representing South Florida’s large Venezuelan community describing it as an “historic day” for the Venezuelan people and Latin America.

“Second unjustified war in my life time,” Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat with reported presidential ambitions, wrote on X shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. “This war is illegal, it’s embarrassing that we went from the world cop to the world bully in less than one year. There is no reason for us to be at war with Venezuela.”

Democratic New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Department of War Secretary Pete Hegseth “blatantly lied to Congress” about the Trump administration’s objective in Venezuela.
