That's just because two factors are absent. Muscle contraction and jumping.

Now multiply time and velocity to get distance:

Top= 1 x sqrt(3)
Middle = sqrt(2) x sqrt(2)
Bottom = sqrt(3) x 1

The professor is right. The middle stream goes furthest.
