Stranger Things, Virtue Signaling, and FAFO
The moment storytelling became messaging and the audience quietly reached for the exit.

The Last Wire

Netflix sits on top of streaming like a monopolist drunk on metrics. Stranger Things is its crown jewel: billions of minutes watched, global reach, Halloween costumes for a decade, soundtracks dragged back from the grave. If any show had earned creative slack, it was this one.

And that is exactly when the trouble started.

Late in the game, Netflix chose to foreground a coming-out storyline for a core character. It was not subtle. It was not incidental. It landed as messaging inside a franchise built on suspense, nostalgia, and momentum. The decision assumed goodwill would absorb the impact. That loyalty already earned would carry the load.

The reaction was immediate. Review bombing. Social media blowback. Fans split into camps. Strip away the shouting and the labels and the issue comes into focus. This was never just about identity. It was about control. Audiences do not like being managed.

The last season that is just coming out now is rather a disappointment.

Never had a Netfix subscription and never will.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I had one years ago, but when the cancelled Farscape when I was in the middle of binge watching it, I cancelled them and never looked back, except to note the O'Bastards took a leadership role in that benighted organization.
