On Gonzo's Pond - Gur
By Luis Gonzalez
For Boiling Frogs Blog

Gonzo’s Pond exists because something sacred is gone. Not misplaced. Not finished. Gone. Over a year later, the grief has not dulled. It has learned my schedule. It rises with me. It waits in rooms that no longer remember how to be full. Loss like this does not recede. It embeds. It rewires the body to expect a presence that will never again cross the floor.

Some absences feel heavier than bodies. They live in muscle memory, in the automatic reach of a hand, in the pause before realizing there will be no answer. Love does not shut off when its object disappears. It keeps generating force, and that force turns inward. It hurts. It hurts everywhere. Gonzo’s Pond holds a little of it. Just enough to keep the rest from spilling over.

There is an old Anishinaabe story I have carried most of my life, one that feels less like myth and more like memory.

When the world grew corrupt and loud with its own forgetting, the Creator sent a flood to begin again. Rain fell without mercy. Rivers swallowed their banks. Forests vanished. Hills became islands, then disappeared. Everything familiar dissolved.

Nanaboozhoo gathered the animals onto a floating log, a fragile thing in an endless, roaring world. The rain was cold. The water relentless. The animals trembled. Some clung to the edges. Some leapt away in panic. Some could not decide whether to trust the humans, the log, or the idea that anything could survive what was coming. Fear made them restless. Doubt made them cruel.

And Dog climbed onto the log.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

As is your tribute to her. Well said, and an emptiness only filled by another in time, never quite the same, but uniquely present.

I have been blessed with five dogs in my lifetime who had tremendous personalities and were anchors for the family, companions, and are still sorely missed. My current one, "Peaches", is a rescue and she, too has stepped into that role. It's hard when they go, because of the hole it leaves in everyone's lives, one which you describe well.

That dog was something else.

She looks a lot like my little Tinker. It's been three years and there is still a hole in my heart.

Just damn, man. You just had to go and make me cry like that. Thank you.

I have had rescue dogs most of my adult life and I loved them for all the reasons you suggest.

Each was unique, of course. But every one was (as my current pup still is) a furry embrace of loyalty and affection that somehow makes the world right, even when it is not.

The fact that they pee on the carpet sometimes does not detract from that fact, not in the least. I'm quite sure I've done worse.

No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

Damn, Luis!!   :crying:

Because I've been 'single' head of household, heading a real estate business for over 30 years, felt I couldn't share the love of a dog.

Even today, I tell clients/customers that the only things that make me LATE are traffic...and dogs.
Can't go by a canine without extending the back of hand with a greeting and a gentle touch.

So gravitated to cats.  More independent given their nature.

Right now, Pretty Girl and I have a bet who's going to live longer.  She's 22...still can jump on the bed.

BTW, syndicated writers/authors have nothing over you.  Just beautiful!!

"It was only a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving, but like morning light it scattered the night and made the day worth living" F. Scott Fitzgerald

Living with cats is basically supervising tipsy friends:
one’s starving, one’s throwing up, and one’s screaming at the wall for absolutely no reason.
