Providence names Oscar Perez new police chief

Ian Donnis  |  February 10, 2023

Oscar Perez, a native of Colombia whose law enforcement career bridges two sharply different eras in Rhode Island’s largest law enforcement agency, was named Friday as the new chief of the Providence Police Department.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley made the selection in his capacity as the city’s acting public safety commissioner two days after Perez and two other finalists participated in a public forum.

While Smiley praised the other finalists, Providence Police Majs. David Lapatin and Kevin Lanni, he said his choice of Perez was largely based on their rapport.

“What I heard from other mayors around the country time and time again, was that trust and personal rapport and that one-on-one relationship is invaluable,” Smiley said during a City Hall news conference, “and that weighed heavily on me.”

Perez, 52, whose family emigrated to Rhode Island from Colombia when he was 13, said he was proud, humbled and honored by his selection as chief.

“I know it is an amazing privilege to lead the men and women of this excellent police department,” Perez said. “The city of Providence has seen me age and develop into who I am. This great city has provided me with the opportunities of a lifetime, and without a doubt has made a dream come true.”

Perez was elevated in November by former mayor Jorge Elorza to the rank of deputy chief, overseeing daily operations and administration. He has also served as a district commander for South Providence and developed a community relations bureau for the department.

Perez is the first person of color to be named chief of the Providence Police Department.

“The fact that you have someone like myself standing here, what do we tell our community members?” he asked. “It’s definitely a historic moment, it’s a proud moment. It’s a way to tell my community and to the young kids out there that says, ‘You can be here as well.’” .  .  .

Brown University Shooting Suspect Identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson

Published 35 minutes ago on December 14, 2025

Providence, R.I. — Authorities have taken a person of interest into custody in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University, according to multiple law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation.

The individual has been identified as Benjamin Erickson, a 24-year-old man originally from Wisconsin, source told Channel2 NOW on the condition of anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the case.

Officials said Erickson was detained at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, approximately 15 miles southwest of Brown’s campus, during an early-morning operation.

Benjamin Erickson served in the 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade.

Federal and local authorities traced the person of interest to the hotel using cellphone geolocation data, according to FBI Director Kash Patel, who confirmed that the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team played a key role in locating the suspect.

“As a result, early this morning, FBI Boston’s Safe Streets Task Force, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Coventry Police Department, detained a person of interest in a hotel room in Coventry, Rhode Island, based on a lead from the Providence Police Department,” Patel said in a public statement.  .  .  .

Person of Interest ID’d in Brown University shooting that killed two, injured 9

Joe Marino and Ronny Reyes  |  Dec. 14, 2025  |  4:24 p.m. ET

The person of interest taken into custody Sunday in connection to the deadly mass shooting at Brown University has been identified as Benjamin Erickson, law-enforcement sources told The Post.

Erickson, 24, was nabbed at a local hotel room after a gunman opened fire at the Ivy League institution’s Providence, RI, campus during a final-exam study session Saturday.

The shooter was armed with a handgun and fired more than 40 .9mm rounds during the chaos, law-enforcement officials said.

Police said the person of interest was taken into custody at a Coventry, RI, hotel at around 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses said the gunman shouted something but that they were not sure exactly what.

Sources told The Post that a unique laser light on his handgun led them to the pe3rson of interest.  .  .  .

Assuming this is, in fact, the guy, we're still likely looking at one of two scenarios:
(1) Some connection to the University that caused a deep sense of grievance against it.
(2) A connection to someone in that classroom, specifically, against whom he had a grievance.
There is also, obviously, a third possibility of serious mental illness that manifested in such a way that he believed 1 or 2.

A lot of people are pointing to a LinkedIn profile of a guy by the same name, and while the age and location seem to fit, I'd urge caution as many other aspects of that profile can't be easily squared with investigations into an allegedly lengthy mental health history. It's one thing to speculate as to motive, another to specifically blame a specific person of a rather generic name.

If A and B are ruled out then
The media will attempt to paint the suspect as a one time Trump supporter.

Now that it looks like A + B are ruled out...

Well one thing is certain:  it’s the most prestigious thing inside that school, or any school.

I’m a bit biased, but I’ve become convinced that most college now is useless.  Only serious sciences have real usage, and some of the more general, traditional social studies (sciences?  lol), but not Oppressed Blacks Studies, and Put-Upon Women’s Studies, and not Art (which including my art-teacher cousin, is tried to be forced into the STEM nonsense as it is, as STEAM as if art people really ever have anything to do with serious science and math).
Can't find fault there.

It's why I became one.

CNN's Gun 'Expert' Stunned by Laser Sights on Handgun – Spoiler: They're Cheap, Common, and Everywhere

WATCH: CNN's "chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst" John Miller fear-mongers about "laser sights" on pistols in the wake of the Brown University shooting.

"One of those firearms, we are told, was equipped with a laser sight device.
This has significance, because number one, that's a fairly sophisticated device for a handgun where when you aim it, a red dot goes where you want to target, and if you fire at that point, the bullet goes where the dot is. It's the kind of things used mostly by professionals, tactical people, military people."

Alabama student killed in Brown University shooting was a ‘bright light,’ Birmingham church says

An Alabama woman was among the victims of a deadly shooting at Brown University yesterday.

Cathedral Church of the Advent in downtown Birmingham said one of its parishioners, Ella Cook, was killed when a gunman opened fire at a building in the Rhode Island university Saturday afternoon.

One other person also died in the shooting.

Speaking during the Sunday morning service, Rev. Craig Smalley said Cook was a “bright light” in the world.

“Tragically, one of our parishioners, Ella Cook, was one of those who was killed yesterday. And those of you who knew her, those of you who know her, she was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light.. not only here growing up here at the Advent in the myriad ways in which she served faithfully and the ways in which she encouraged and lift up those around her, but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

Smalley urged the congregation to pray for Cook and her family.  .  .  .

Ella’s role as GOP vice president on a hyper-liberal campus like Brown makes this feel personal—conservative students there have faced protests, doxxing, and threats for years, especially post-October 7. The shooter targeted a review session in a single classroom; was it random, or did he know who’d be there? A person of interest, Benjamin Warner, 24, from Wisconsin, was detained Sunday morning at a hotel near Providence Airport—CNN journalists heard the raid at 4 a.m., banging doors and “Open up!” shouts—but he was released after evidence pointed elsewhere. Rhode Island AG Peter Neronha said there was “some degree of evidence” against Warner, but it “needed to be corroborated,” and now “points in a different direction.” No name, no face on the real suspect yet, despite Brown’s camera net.

You have to admit, the Brown University shooting has all the makings of a bad thriller: a gunman bursts into a finals study session, guns down two students, wounds nine more, and then… poof, vanishes into the Providence night. Now, the plot thickens with a “person of interest” detained, grilled, and released in under 24 hours, leaving folks wondering if this is a cover-up or just Rhode Island’s finest dropping the ball. The attack hit the Barus & Holley engineering building on Saturday, December 13, 2025, around 4:05 p.m.—a quiet weekend grind for physics majors turned bloodbath. The shooter, a male in black, fled down Hope Street, and despite a lockdown and campus-wide alert, he’s still loose as of Sunday morning.

Person Of Interest In Brown University Shooting Released As Manhunt Continues

Published 41 seconds ago

on December 15, 2025

By Cullen McCue

The person of interest who was arrested early Sunday morning in connection with the previous day’s shooting at Brown University has been released without charges, officials announced at a press conference late Sunday night.

Officials provided very little details on a potential suspect until it was announced that an arrest had been made at a hotel in the town of Coventry, Rhode Island, about 28 miles south of Providence. After receiving a public tip, the FBI’s Investigation’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team used cellphone data to geolocate the person of interest, described as a male in his 20’s, Director Kash Patel announced in a statement.

Police recovered two firearms — including a handgun that matched the description of the weapon used in the attack — upon searching the hotel room. The person of interest was ultimately released, however, after submitting to questioning.

“The person of interest detained in connection with the fatal mass shooting at Brown University is being released without charges,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said during a press conference on Sunday night.

Somewhere there is video/images of the shooter.  The cops need to call in veterans of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing to help them do a through canvassing of all potential video/photo sources.

Providence is legendary for its corruption.  With corruption comes ineptitude.

Liberals are not known for competenence.

Brown University is a pass/fail liberal Ivy league school.  I would not be surprised if they had the same security consultants as the Louvre.

I'm sure the Politboro of Professors found an esoteric liberal philosophic refutal for every recommendation every security consultant ever provided them.

Liberals want to be believe they live in a impenetrable bubble of elitist utopianism, apart from the daily trevails of society's Neanderthals.

Now, if your gut reaction is that an Ivy League campus must have security cameras all over the place, your instincts are correct.

“Since 2017, my friends and I have marked the locations of approximately 150 surveillance cameras on College Hill,” Wrenn wrote. “While this is only a fraction of Brown University’s more than 800 cameras, the scope of the surveillance is staggering: It is impossible to cross (or even approach) Brown University without being surveilled. I encourage you to try.”

Apparently, the shooter figured it out.
Where's the surveillance state when you need it?, Washington Post
The WashPo article is by subscription, but he references a 2021 survey that showed more than 800 cameras across campus.

You know that moment in a press conference when a simple question gets treated like it’s classified nuclear codes? That’s exactly what happened Monday when Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez faced reporters asking about what witnesses say the Brown University shooter yelled right before he opened fire, killing two students and wounding nine others. The gunman burst into the Barus & Holley building Saturday afternoon, and survivors claim he shouted “Allahu Akbar”—the infamous jihadist battle cry—but Perez wasn’t giving an inch. “That’s part of the investigation,” he repeated like a broken record when pressed. When one reporter pleaded that releasing it could help the public identify him—like the Unabomber’s brother recognizing his manifesto—Perez dodged again: “We have to confirm that.” Then, as questions turned to cell phone videos from the scene, Mayor Brett Smiley stepped in and shut the whole thing down.

Really? Because I was going to guess “This is MAGA Country” or “Merry Christmas” lol

This attack happened within a day of the attack in Australia, and those attackers did say "Allahu Akbar"

So if the Providence attackers did too - why wouldn't the Police Chief answer a simple question? - then you have to wonder if there was some sort of co-ordination ...

The pieces of the Brown University shooting puzzle are starting to snap together in a way that’s impossible to ignore, and the one detail authorities keep dodging might be the key to everything. Multiple witnesses—students and others inside the Barus & Holley building—told reporters the gunman yelled “Allahu Akbar” right before he opened fire Saturday afternoon, killing two and wounding nine in a finals review session. That’s the infamous jihadist battle cry, the same one echoed in attacks from Paris to Pulse. Yet when Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez faced questions at Monday’s presser, he shut it down cold: “That’s part of the investigation.” A reporter pushed, explaining it could help the public ID the shooter—like the Unabomber’s brother recognizing his manifesto—but Perez stonewalled, repeating it’s under review. Then Mayor Brett Smiley ended the briefing as questions turned to cell phone videos.

Cue the Brown University president blaming the “far right” when asked about this

This attack happened within a day of the attack in Australia, and those attackers did say "Allahu Akbar"

So if the Providence attackers did too - why wouldn't the Police Chief answer a simple question?....

Why not?  Because the Providence Police Chief is a left-wing Democrat and thus is pretending even to himself that Islamophobia [sic] is a problem.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

FBI releases footage showing the Brown University shooting person of interest casually walking past responding officers shortly after two students were killed and nine others were injured.

That is a very good question.

"If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

Brown University is mass deleting a series of celebratory articles on its website relating to Mustapha Kharbouch, a foreign born Palestinian student in its Middle East studies dept.

Mustapha participated in the Hamas encampments at Brown & wrote in article declaring the need for a rebellion against the U.S. and Israel.

Someone has also deleted his X account.

Mustapha is clearly a bad ideological actor, but there are no reports thus far that he has been implicated in the incident at Brown. Though the consequential timing is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

The person of interest, Mustapha Kharbouch, published a 2024 manifesto with the Institute for Palestine Studies, now deleted, in which he framed campus activism as revolutionary struggle and called for sustained confrontation.

Notable quotes include:

“Our refusal to be complacent in the heart of the empire is the bare minimum of love and care we can show our people in Gaza.”

“Palestine is becoming a question of how we want to fundamentally rearrange our world.”

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

Providence and Brown is covering something up.  That Mayor and the PC are Brown Toadies. Where TF is the FBI.  They should be blowing this story up.

Brown's President just denied knowing anything about her university scrubbing pages of a student from their website.

But, it is undoubtedly true that sometime after the shooting, a Palestinian Brown student named Mustapha Kharbouch had his page brought down from the university's Center for Middle East studies. ...

It sounds like one of the conspirators has been identified.  Anyone want to bet that he’s already left the country?
