BEING ROY NEARY: NEARY LIVES!
(A Gonzo Dispatch from the Age of SecWar Hegseth - Part 1)

Boiling Frogs Blog

I didn’t expect him to return—not after all these years, not after I’d finally learned to keep the strange parts of my brain in their cage. Yet all it took was one text.

Thanksgiving morning.
Not a turkey GIF.
Not a “Happy Thanksgiving, brother!”
Not even a “we still on for libations?”

Just:

“What’s gonna happen with Hegseth?”

I was wrestling an 18 lb. bird, checking the internal temperature, when the message landed. And then it stayed... circling my mind like a hawk that sensed fear or guilt or destiny or some combination thereof.

Indeed, what is going to happen to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth?

Years of introspection and the slow grind of modern life had marked my soul as deeply as they had left my hands mottled and spotted with age. I can ignore just about anything these days. But that question cut through all of it.

The neighbor who texted me, former military, tough enough to reenlist at the drop of a hat, was asking me. Not his old CO. Not one of his retired buddies.

Me.

An “overfed, long-haired, leaping gnome” (to paraphrase somebody from my dim, murky memories of the ’ 70s), why me?

“What’s gonna happen with Hegseth?”

It felt less like a question and more like a signal flare.

I appreciate the cinematic analogy, and the musical one, too.

Spill The Wine is the song you were thinking of, Luis, by Eric Burdon (formerly of the Animals) and the group War, coincidentally enough.

The more close encounters one has with Official Washington, the more one comes to appreciate just how insular and disrespectful they are of normal Americans, meaning the working class taxpayers who largely shoulder the weight of their salaries.

It's an exclusive club, and as George Carlin long ago noted: you're not invited.

Many permanent members of our estado profundo are especially insolent toward MAGA types who dare to take a seat at what were supposed to be reserved tables for the best and the brightest, not for the ignoramuses whose fathers or grandfathers did not have sinecures at the State or Defense Departments, as many of theirs did.

The internal animosity toward Pete Hegseth is a fine example. The rank-and-file think he's swell, it would seem. The flag officers... not so much.

Accordingly, the military brass, proudly bedecked with service ribbons for everything but a war that we actually won... snipe and leak to willing accomplices in the news media, which serves as the PR front office for Democrat party, whose members naturally dominate our permanent government.

They'd love nothing more than for people like Hegesth to be shown the door - not even reseated near the kitchen - but booted from what they consider their own private dining room.

No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

I obsessed over this for a while then decided to resuscitate Roy Neary.

Part 3 (Final installment due out soon)
