Excellent use of the technology!

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. How is that different than cops using Fleer or other thermal imaging for decades? Because they used a drone which is cheaper? Glad the kid was found and is alright, but…..

For starters, drones can be deployed from a car trunk (SUV), can be replaced for less than most bits on a helicopter, consume far less fuel, have considerably less delay in deployment, and risk no pilot/observer lives in foul weather, not to mention GPS capability which can eliminate redundant searching and make the whole operation more efficient.  They can even be set up to drop a small pack with water, food or survival blankets while waiting for ground personnel to get there, and can even get into places a helicopter cannot.

Potentially, and correctly used, they can bring a lot to the table.

I remember when GPS built into radios revolutionized search and rescue operations. No more having to search for searchers!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

For the price of a helicopter/pilot/crew, you can have a lot of drones, scouring more land faster.

No, I wasn’t talking about the obvious benefits of modern drone technology. Even in the sixties  the Green Hornet deployed a drone from the Black Beauty’s trunk, though they called it a scanner, it was supposed to have video and audio transmission. I was talking about the thermal imaging which they made such a point of.

Don’t mind me I’m just plain and simple worn out, no sleep and no down time for a year and half has a way of catching up to me and I am more of a Dick than usual.

Don't sweat it. BTDT I know sleep deprivation and overwork. No offense taken, as I was sure none was intended. FLIR has come a long way, too.

Lol, half the things I post seem silly the next day when reexamined ... We all friends here... just talking and saying what is on our minds (sleep deprived though it may be).
