Here’s what White House loses with East Wing’s demolition
by Ryan Mancini - 10/23/25 5:41 PM ET

Demolition of the White House’s East Wing, itself a source of multiple controversies for more than 200 years, was completed Thursday.

Excavators were spotted starting Monday tearing it apart.

It was home to first lady Melania Trump’s office, the offices of the White House social secretary and calligrapher, as well as the movie theater and the presidential bunker.

The staff members of those offices were relocated to other parts of the White House, CNN reported.

The demolition will set the stage for construction of a $300 million ballroom, “a bold, necessary addition” to the executive mansion, the Trump administration said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The East Wing’s razing was met with criticism both by preservationists and by more than half of the American public. In death, the East Wing has come full circle, as it received criticism at the time of its birth during early 1800s.

Every past renovation was met with people who were against them until they were for them.  No different than the morons today.

It was home to first lady Melania Trump’s office, the offices of the White House social secretary and calligrapher, as well as the movie theater and the OLD presidential bunker.

Per reports from around the web there is a new bunker under the South Lawn that was built during the Obama years. Reinforcing this notion is the fact that the old PEOC was declassified in 2020 and opened for press tours.

Too bad the jackass, Obama, couldn't figure out a ballroom was needed ---

During his presidency, Barack Obama hosted multiple state dinners in tents on the White House South Lawn, most notably his first in 2009 for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The use of a tent allowed the administration to host a much larger guest list than the smaller, traditional venues inside the White House.

* 2009: First state dinner for India

Purpose: The dinner was held on November 24, 2009, to honor Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. By expanding the guest list to over 300 people, the Obamas wanted to signal a more open administration.

Tent: A large, heated pavilion was set up on the South Lawn. The decor featured magnolia branches and ivy, with views of the Washington Monument.

Other notable state dinners in tents

* May 2010 (Mexico): A dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderón included dessert and entertainment in a tent on the South Lawn.

* March 2012 (United Kingdom): The Obamas hosted Prime Minister David Cameron for a dinner and entertainment in a tent on the South Lawn.

* February 2014 (France): A state dinner for President François Hollande was held entirely in a tent on the South Lawn.

* May 2016 (Nordic leaders): A dinner was held in a tent on the South Lawn for the leaders of five Nordic countries.

* October 2016 (Italy): The Obamas hosted their final state dinner for Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in a tent on the South Lawn.

This is cozy.   (still no dance floor ...)

This is privately funded @Sighlass. $46.5 billion specifically for border wall construction and related barriers was passed with the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (H.R.1), signed into law on July 4, 2025.

Just last week @Sighlass  --

Waivers and contracts enable massive border wall-building plans: DHS awarded $4.5 billion in contracts to build nearly 230 miles of new land and aquatic border barriers (about $20 million per mile). The construction is enabled by waivers of multiple laws, including environmental protections.

As badly as I hate to say this, hosting state dinners and world leaders in a tent* (no matter how elegant) is tacky. I had no idea that was the case.

I just hope the decor is elegant. DJT's taste doesn't necessarily coincide with mine. Maybe he should let Melania handle it. No matter,  the East Wing is history.

*Back in the day, we would have big parties in the summer and at Thanksgiving here. I used a tent since my house is small. But I ain't representing the country.

Ok  -- different angle.  Trump just recently stated that he's going to make this ballroom even larger.  I would love to see at least a portion of it somehow named after Charlie Kirk.  IIRC Trump has stated that he's going to name it after himself.  happy77

I had a ‘discussion’ with my dumbass brother in law yesterday and while I was trying to make nice and ask about his health and project car he tosses out “what do you think of this monstrosity ballroom Trumps building and tearing down part of the White House?” Now my BIL really doesn’t know shit except for what the communists he works with tell him. His whole working life has been handing out and taking in costumes and uniforms at Disney Anaheim, and really all he knows is Disneyland.

I played nice and pointed out that it was being paid for privately, including Trumps own money and that our state dinners and events have been held in tents, unlike ever other nation that has actually ballrooms and dining facilities. My BIL then opines that well he just doesn’t like Trump. I at that point told him that I didn’t want to play anymore, that we were obviously on two different sides of he aisle and I saw no point in continuing. As I said my BIL doesn't watch any news, neither left or right, so everything he knows comes from the younger people that work with him, and as a gun owner, if he votes dem, especially in California he’s even dumber than I already gave him credit for.

From what I have seen, the ballroom will age gracefully.  He needs to stop adding gold leaf to the other parts of the White House.

He does go nuts with the gold, doesn't he? I thought Ivana, and later Ivanka, were to blame for that decorating choice, but perhaps it's the Donald's preference. We once stayed at the Trump Int'l hotel in D.C. and all the gold trim was a bit overwhelming.

Yes, gold (or items gilded in gold) is his preference but it also represents wealth and status; something perhaps that he feels our country needs to display.  If you look at other places especially in the ME they also use gold (gilded or not I don't know) and right now our White House pales in comparison.  I don't think expanding the ballroom so we don't need to use tents and using gold decor is excessive.  I think he's likely taken note of palaces that he has entered in the ME; in particular Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and the gold Arabian Palace. Yet the U.S. is using tents????  Seriously.  That is embarrassing.
