Massive AWS outage breaks most of the internet — Live updates on Venmo, Amazon and more

Toms Guide

Amazon Web Services (AWS) went down earlier today and took many important services across the internet down with it. Several fixes have been deployed, though outages are still affecting a swath of services.

Collectively reports on Downdetector hit a high of over 50,000 reports starting around 7:50 am.

For the unaware, AWS is crucial backbone of the internet acting as infrastructre for apps and websites the likes of Snapchat, Venmo, Ring, Pokémon GO and more are also down because of AWS' outage.

With an implement fix, things may be turning around, slowly.

We're following this outage live, getting information on what's happened and trying to pursue detail on when a fix could be put in place. Despite the company's best efforts, fixes deployed so far haven't helped.

Here's the timeline

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Apparently, it is still ongoing to an extent.

Here’s who has been impacted by the AWS outage

The Hill

Scores of popular online platforms experienced problems Monday as Amazon Web Services (AWS) grappled with an outage.

Amazon’s cloud computing arm, which is a leading provider of cloud infrastructure services, first reported issues around 3 a.m. EDT in the “US-East-1″ region located in Northern Virginia.

It identified a problem with its DynamoDB database and began applying fixes to resolve the issue. The company said around 6:30 a.m. it had been “fully mitigated” and most services were up and working again.

However, a second wave of outages appeared late Monday morning. AWS linked the connectivity problems to an issue with its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which allows users to virtually access computing power.

It began applying fixes early Monday afternoon and said around 4 p.m. the company was seeing improvements across all of its services.

Here’s what has reported issues amid the AWS outage:

Expect more of this as we got away from decentralized servers and gravitated to cloud servers like Amazon.  Never put your eggs in one basket.

Oh, so that's what woke me up at 2:45am this morning.

To explain, I listen to Internet radio music through my Echo device to help me sleep. Around 2:45am I woke up to realize that the music wasn't playing. I then spent an hour trying to figure out why my Echo couldn't reach the Internet before finally realizing that it was a problem on Amazon's end and not my network connection. At that point I found another way to play music and went back to sleep. When I woke up around 5:45am and tried the Echo again, it was working.

  • RUSSIA MUST BE DESTROYED!!!
I have it on decent authority that this was an attack on Amazon's DNS servers - all over the world. The attack was likely from a nation state with the global resources to carry out such an attack.

Russia, China, and North Korea being the likely suspects.

Not surprised by Roku being down. All of their services are hosted on AWS.  Netflix, too, and many other large streamers.
