Not supporting the status quo as far as property taxes, necessarily, just irked when people say "i'm retired I shouldn't have to pay". Presumably there's some services in your town you pay for, unless the town just wastes it, which is another issue entirely. street cleaning, clearing, garbage(?)... snow removal. Older people as a general rule require as many if not more services.

In my town, I voted against a new budget that would have raised property taxes. We successfully defeated it and I can afford to live in this town.

One day I'll be retired, hopefully, and my opinion will still be my opinion. If you use services you should pay for them, one way or the other.

I've never said "do away with property taxes for retired people." What I have, and fully intend to continue saying, is "Do away with property taxes entirely!" As in for everyone!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Hey i'm right there with you. Services can be privatized, or can use "Use taxes", or we can use sales taxes... or maybe just sales taxes on property only at POS.

I'm for it! Mainly because they are deceptive. They tout how they have lowered property taxes...but then raise property values. 9999hair out0000

It's the same game everywhere (probably using the same software).

My point about us seniors was that we paid for our property. We aren't using schools, we pay for other services. Local sales taxes can fund the rest (even though people from elsewhere will pay part of those).
But I am philosophically against the idea that YOUR home can be taken from you (whether you have 100% equity or not) because you failed to pay the government rent on your own property.
It's no better than owning your trailer and paying lot rent.

You may not know this and maybe it is in Idaho and not where you live. You still have to pay property tax on a mobile home you own even if it is on rented lot. @Smokin Joe

They have that here, too.

In California you are supposed to pay property tax on capital equipment in your business. Tax, tax, tax...

Property taxes are a holdover from the days when you had to prove property ownership in order to vote. Property owners got the bills for what they voted for. Now everyone gets to vote but property owners still get the bills.

Property taxes ... education costs ... housing costs ... healthcare costs ... commuting costs ... insurance costs ... grow faster than the 'rate of inflation' and faster than 'wage growth'.

As long as you don't need to pay living expenses, inflation and taxes aren't a problem.
