You live there, you're still using services. As an older person, you probably rely plenty on services. Especially emergency and such. The housing market is murder for younger people. You don't want to pay, sell.
That being said, I have voted for lower property taxes here. Just don't think it's fair that older people don't want to pay.
Services:
I use water, sewer, garbage.
I pay a monthly bill for that.
I use electricity and fiber internet, and I pay for those.
I pay the 911 fees on my phone bills (cell and landline).
I clear my own snow from the sidewalks, which I paid for (the sidewalks).
I'm paying special assessments on the streets and the plumbing under them which amount to 20% of the cost of putting all that in. Some of the rest came from the oil extraction tax (impact funding), and I have worked on drilling rigs to bring in that money for 46 years. Still am.
If I call an ambulance, the bill will start at about $1600.00
It's less than a mile to the hospital.
The Fire Department gets response fees, too, but after the fire in my home was extinguished and the mess sorted, I donated $5,000 to the Department. I know those guys and they (friends) did right by me.
The streets I paid to put in are seldom plowed--we learn to drive on packed snow and ice here.
I have a Malinois and am armed, and have no crime problem, because guns and dogs are pretty common here. I cannot recall calling the police except to report a hit and run (property damage).
Pray tell, considering, all that, exactly what services I am taxing to the point that I could be taxed out of my home through arbitrary reevaluations of my property.
Consider, too, that two of three commissioners are realtors...
The housing market will be no kinder for younger people if I sell. That's some socialist nonsense, anyway. Houses are still being built here, there is plenty of space for apartments, and keeping needs ahead of 'wants' is the difference in managing money well enough to get ahead. For those who want to work, there are ample opportunities to get paid $ $25 an hour or more. I made $20 an hour delivering pizzas during COVID, mainly because I hustled.
So I'm going to hold off on getting a van down by the river for now.
Over half of the tax bill is for schools. I haven't had a kid in school for decades, and I paid for the grandkids we raised to go to Parochial school. The State is supposed to pay for the public schools in full.
Go ahead, justify being able to tax me out of the home I paid for after 38 years of living there.
Change my mind.
