A shooter at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan

A shooter at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, injured multiple victims and then was taken down Sunday, according to local police. The status of the victims is not known at this time.

Police there is no threat to the public at this time. The church building is also “actively on fire.”


Authorities told the Washington Examiner more details will be released at a press conference at 12:45 p.m. ET.

Police directed the public to avoid the area, and several reunification sites are established.

Multiple people have been hurt in a shooting at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, police said on Sunday morning.

The Grand Blanc Township Police Department said in a Facebook post at 11:12 a.m. that there was an active shooter at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 4825 McCandlish Rd., and "there are multiple victims," and that the shooter "is down."

Police said there is no active threat to the public.

The conditions of the victims haven't been disclosed.

Police added that the church was "actively" on fire, but crews have since contained the flames. They are asking the public to avoid the area.

Officials have set up an on-site reunification site at a movie theatre on Trillium Circle Avenue.

... The shooting took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 4285 McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc Township, police said.

The church was full with "hundreds" of people attending services about 10:25 a.m., when a gunman rammed a vehicle into the building and began shooting an assault rifle, "firing several rounds at individuals within the church," said Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye.

Renye credited two trained officers — one from the township police department and one from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources — for stopping the shooter.

"They met the suspect and engaged in gunfire with that particular individual, neutralizing that suspect, and that suspect is no longer with us."  ...

Two people are dead, including the shooter, and nine others are being treated at local hospitals. Multiple victims are in critical condition, police said.  ...

The gunman, Renye said, was 40-year-old man from Burton. It’s unclear at this point what connection, if any, the shooter had to the church. There are questions, too, about how the fire started.

"We are still trying to determine exactly when and where the fire ended up coming from and how it got started," Renye said. "We believe it was deliberately set, though, by the suspect." ...

Finding out motive is vitally important.

I haven't seen any indication that the guy's motive is known. Did he have some anger toward LDS? All religions? Any church at all? Perhaps he just wanted to hurt some people, and if the building had been full of Sikhs, that would have worked, too.

Sanford, a Marine veteran who served in the Iraq War, rammed his Chevrolet Silverado truck into the building before opening fire on churchgoers as they exited the building. An old Facebook post from Sanford’s mother says the gunman — who was killed in a shootout with responding officers — served in Iraq from 2004 through 2008.

Four IEDs found in Michigan church shooter's pickup truck, ATF says



The truck belonging to the man who allegedly crashed into The Church of Latter-Day Saints in Grand Blanc before opening fire on a crowd of worshippers was loaded with explosive devices, authorities said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) told Fox Detroit that there were four IEDs found in Thomas Sanford's truck after it crashed into the church on Monday. 

The IEDs were made of consumer grade fireworks and smoke canisters stuck together, the station reported.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the ATF.

He supposedly was married, but there was something about a former relationship with a Mormon woman (in the conversation he had with the guy who had a conversation with him a few days ago). Perhaps her church elders had urged her not to have a relationship with a non-Mormon, and that set him off. Who knows. I hope we find out, so the left can stop saying he was a MAGA run amok. This appears to have had nothing to do with politics.
