It is no secret that the Coast Guard is historically underfunded, but that is about to change.
The fiscal year 2026 budget provides increased funding, but the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is life-changing support for the Coast Guard. This is good news for the country at a time when emerging national security threats demand a strong maritime border and military force.
The Coast Guard is one of the most distinctive agencies in government. Its broad-ranging authorities from Titles 10, 14 and 50 — among others — make it a truly unique tool for the United States to employ. At all times a Title 10 military, a Title 14 law enforcement and a Title 50 intelligence community asset, the Coast Guard can be deployed against a myriad of complex national security problems.
Alexander Hamilton had it right when he created the Coast Guard to collect tariffs for the fledgling nation in 1790. It was then called the Revenue Cutter Service. Centuries later, that could not have been more relevant.
