Has anyone done a price comparison between Costco and Sam's?  Is one materially more or less that the other one?

The correct title of the recipe is:  Christmas Eve Beef Stew

Recipe is at allrecipes:  https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/12900/christmas-eve-beef-stew/

And I will say, talking about it has me wanting to run to the store and get the ingredients to make it.  It is yummy!

Note:  No Hamburger Helper here!

Sam's is Wallyworld up in here. We have a superstore. I would say it is cheaper over all than Costco - Though Costco is probably the better product quality.

But at least up in here, Kroger (Smith's up here) is way more bang-for-buck than any of em.

Then Rosaurs as a close second, right in there with Super One... The Albertson's right after them...

I hardly ever shop at Wallyworld, party because it is really hard to find parking, but also because the pricing is not all that great... I still get my paper products there, but that's about it.  And I am currently only buying coffee and butter at Costco, and that won't be for long. I will be letting my Costco membership lapse this next time around.

I'm looking for a good Goulash recipe.

1lb 80/20 ground beef or chipped beef
1 yellow onion (fist sized)
1 green pepper
2 sticks celery
2 cans diced tomato
3-4c macaroni noodles.

optional: gravy mix, 1 can tomato sauce, 1 can green chilies, 2 jalapenos.

Chop up veggies - somewhere between a rough chop and a 1/4" dice. get em frying in covered cast iron dutch oven w/ butter or olive oil. when the celery starts to lose bite, take the lid off and throw in the burger. When the burger is browned, add canned goods worry it together and put it to a boil - then simmer till the noodles are ready.

In a separate pot, set water to a boil and add noodles (10 minute noodles, not them crappy 7 minute ones) ... strain, and throw into the pot with the meat mix

Notes: If you have gravy mix, shake it onto the browned burger, enough to form a glaze before adding canned goods... Or do a roux with butter, flour, beef stock if you'd rather. I personally don't like adding tomato sauce, but some folks would.

Better as leftover. And you really need to make a goulash sandwich - cold goulash stacked up on buttered bread.

My DIL says our Costco tends to be higher than Sam's. We don't shop at either. Having to pay for a membership sorta makes me feel forced to shop there. My last employer paid for membership, but now that I' m retired  I don't need to shop there

One thing we have noticed, though, is on any given week a store will have a, b, and c lower and d, e, f will be higher . At the next store a, b, and c will be higher and d, e, and f will be lower. We do a lot of  price per (ounce) and not package size. If you do that you can save quite a bit.

I started buying paper products on Amazon. Good deals compared to our grocery store. No Costco or Sam's close.

I usually just make a list of items I really need, then peruse online the weekly ads for Kroger and Aldi and see which bargain jumps out at me, like $1.99 boneless pork loin or Buy 2/Get 3 free soda pop. Then I check out whether Kroger's digital coupons for the week include anything I can use. Eventually, a shopping list emerges, and I can hit both stores on the same day (generally, Friday, because Kroger offers quadruple fuel points that day with a digital coupon). Saving money on groceries is now my primary hobby.  :pondering:

For those of you disappointed with the recipe I posted, it not having ground beef, I will provide another recipe that has ground beef that we also enjoy.

Glop (that is the name of the dish I gave it)

Line an iron Dutch Oven pot bottom with Ore-Ida tator tots

Fry 2lbs of ground beef in a frying pan, browning it, making sure to break it down with no lumps

Mix the browned ground beef with the following:

1  large onion chopped to your preferred size
1-2 heads of broccoli cut to small florets (number of heads depending on your size of Dutch oven)
3/4 to 1 lb of extra sharp cheddar cheese grated in strips that are about 1/16th of an inch wide
1 teaspoon pepper (more or less to taste)
1 teaspoon salt

Bake covered for 1 hour at 350 F.

Very tasty!

I hope the savings at Sam's Club are worth the membership fee. We once bought a new vehicle through Sam's Club and got a good price, so it was worth it that year, at any rate!
