In electronics there were Sams service manuals. I don't know if they did anything outside of electronics.

Used to have file cabinets full of them.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
63 Studebaker GranTurismo with Avanti drivetrain about as basic as ya get, carburetor, pugs, points and condenser and back then I  had manuals that not just gave step by step instructions they als had detailed pics that Chiltons never got close to.
I liked Haynes better than Chiltons, and still have both from that era, but if you could get your hands on the factory shop manuals, that was the holy grail.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

The one I used back then was but they stopped publishing in 2021, but you can find archives online.

I think television has promoted that sort of lifestyle, and too many youngsters have no concept of the difference between their needs and wants. They are conditioned to overspend, and then be in thrall to whoever the lender is for insane amounts of interest on their debts. College loans are just one more example, with many out there obviously having failed to do any sort of cost/benefit analysis on their education.

If there wasn't so much sanctimony from educated people who can't unclog their drains or change the oil in their own car, directed at people who get dirty at work, maybe kids would make better choices.

It's everything: car, giant truck, house, latest iPhone, streaming services, vacations, toys (around here, ATVs, campers or boats), spend, spend, spend.

Congress does not exist to fix my own bad decisions. Can't afford a $100,000 car? Don't buy one.
The cash for clunkers program took many good used cars out of circulation forcing people into new unaffordable ones...

Yes, and that really left a relative shortage of parts vehicles for some model blocks.

It was what government does best. Fix a nonexisting problem and leave us with tragic results.  Down right criminal was what that program was.

It actually contributed to a local salvage yard going out of business. Not one part could be removed from the 'cash for clunkers' vehicles, despite some of them being in good shape. In the meantime, they took up yard space that could have been occupied by vehicles being salvaged, and the government took its sweet time purchasing them so they could be removed to the crusher. Having limited space, this choked the yard with vehicles that could not be dismantled, but kept others from being there.
It was a bad program all around.

I'm going to restate this a little differently.

"What government does best is create problems where non exist then pretend to fix them while lining their pockets in the process."
