Shooting downhill (in this case around 30+ feet higher) causes a shot to usually be higher on mark.... some say it is easier to shoot uphill than downhill. So his point of aim was probable center mass.

The kid had hunted in the past with his dad. No word on whether this was a family-owned rifle or purchased by Robinson.

He was in law enforcement, I assumed he went into construction after retiring from the Sheriffs Department.

There was too much discussion on whether the shooter missed or hit where he was aiming to start at the beginning...so I'll add my comment here.

I think the kid was aiming for the victims head.

And because he was an amateur shooter what he didn't account for was the bullet drop at that distance.

At 200 yards it's somewhere around 3" for a .30-06 if memory serves.

I don't think the shooter took that into consideration.

I suppose we will never truly know unless the kid talks, which his lawyers will never allow him to do.

But you're pretty much right on. The standard drop for that round is about 4" at 200 yds., perhaps even a bit more (Win vs. Federal. vs. Remington, # of grains, etc.).

The shooting distance was approximately 175 yards, so it is entirely conceivable that he was going for a head shot.   Not that it matters, of course. The result is sadly the same.
