President Donald Trump has expanded federal control over law enforcement measures in Washington, D.C., coinciding with Police Chief Pamela Smith’s decision to allow local officers to assist federal immigration enforcement efforts. While city leaders argued the move undermines established sanctuary policies, some officials believe it could help reduce crime. Smith’s order permits D.C. police to support federal actions, including during routine traffic stops.
