Trump Cuts ‘Lifeline’ for 80,000 California Migrant Students
Their families keep California farms running. Trump cuts just stripped a ‘lifeline’ from them.
 
 

When Yvette Medina was growing up in the labor camps of California’s Central Valley, she’d often accompany her father to the bank to cash checks.

“He’d tell me, ‘You should be a bank teller. You’re inside all day, out of the sun,’” Medina recalled. “For me, growing up, there weren’t a lot of options or things to aspire to. My parents just didn’t know what was out there.”

A program called Mini-Corps changed all that. Mini-Corps, part of the state’s Migrant Education program, sends bilingual tutors to schools and labor camps to help children whose parents work in California’s agricultural fields, dairies, fisheries and timberlands. Medina credits Mini-Corps tutors with getting her through high school and helping her enroll in college, where she ultimately earned a teaching credential.

But now the Migrant Education program is defunded, at least temporarily, after President Donald Trump withheld its grant money on July 1. Several other education programs were also halted, including after-school centers, English learner programs and professional development for teachers. In California, the cuts totaled more than $810 million.

I have no issue with English as a Second Language classes for legal migrants.  It helps to mainstream them and help them become active participants in the American Experiment.

Money used to fund programs for illegal aliens take funds and opportunities away from poor citizens and legal immigrants.

Dems are basically making illegal aliens and poor Americans engage in a collective bum fight and class warfare for limited Government resources.

One of my very good friends immigrated with her family (legally) from Mexico when she was two. The parents spoke Spanish at home so as a consequence she spoke no English. When it came time for her to go to school, off she went...not speaking the language. She learned really fast.

And as an aside, when they came here they couldn't apply for assistance. Even if they could have her dad wouldn't have allowed it. He worked 3 jobs to support the family.

what the democrats have done is raise illegal aliens to a standard above both legal immigrants and American citizens. In what world should illegal immigrants be mainstreamed into America? To take elementary, middle school, high school and college seats and dollars from Americans and legal immigrants? To take jobs from Americans and legal immigrants? Or the real end game, to dilute the vote of American citizens and allow democrats to steal congressional and senate seats?
