Russia has launched its largest naval drills in recent years, conducting simultaneous operations in the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific, and the Baltic Sea, with additional activity reported in the Caspian.

The exercises, titled “July Storm”, began on July 23 and are scheduled to continue until July 27, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The drills involve more than 15,000 personnel, over 150 naval and auxiliary vessels, 120 aircraft, 10 coastal missile systems, and approximately 950 other military assets. Four of Russia’s fleets are participating in the operation: the Baltic, Northern, Pacific, and Caspian Fleets.

The exercises are being overseen by Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy.

Maybe but I can't give Zelensky a pass for the stupid politics here.  He should have foreseen the really bad optics when he signed that bill into law.  Now he's trying to backtrack and push a rescension law through the Parliament to make it go away.  That was just dumb.

Since January 1, the FSB has been given the right to create its own pretrial detention centers, like the KGB in the USSR. The initiator of the law, Vasily Piskarev, explained it this way: over the past 10 years, the number of arrests for treason, espionage, terrorism, and extremism has tripled in the country. Today, Putin signed a law according to which any organization can be recognized as extremist if at least one of its participants is recognized as an extremist. A couple friends are noting that the Russians are being watched very carefully given that their last large scale 'exercise' was cover for an act of war.

NATO defenses are heightened in response, as they should be.

Chinese suppliers are playing a key role in providing Russia with components for the production of attack drones used in its war against Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on July 8, citing documents reviewed by the outlet.

According to a 2023 report by Ukrainian intelligence, 92% of all foreign components found in Russian drones originate from China. These parts include electronics, cameras, engines, antennas, and navigation modules.

The components are supplied both directly and through intermediary networks that include companies based in Hong Kong, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates. Some of the Chinese suppliers involved are major manufacturers that officially claim to operate solely in the civilian sector. In some cases, the parts are delivered to Russia disguised as equipment for agricultural or aerial photography purposes.
