Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, August 15, 2025

Excerpts:

Putin said nothing in the joint press conference to indicate that he has moderated either his war aims or his willingness to compromise on them and reiterated language he has used since 2021 to justify Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Putin again demonstrated that he has not changed his views on Ukrainian sovereignty since 2021 and remains disinterested in serious peace negotiations with Ukraine. Putin used the joint press conference following the August 15 Alaska summit to evoke the Kremlin's long-standing narrative that Russia and Ukraine share the “same roots” and that Russia considers Ukraine to be a “brotherly” nation.

Putin published an essay on the “Historic Unity of Russians and Ukrainians” in July 2021, in which he similarly ideologized that Ukrainians and Belarusians have always belonged to the Russian nation because of their shared “historical and spiritual space.”

ISW previously assessed that the essay, which Putin published less than a month after meeting with then-US President Joe Biden in Geneva in June 2021, was an ultimatum to Kyiv as it openly questioned Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Putin stated in the essay that Ukraine was a ”product of the Soviet era shaped on the lands of historical Russia,” and reiterated these arguments in his February 2022 declaration of war against Ukraine as a justification for his full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The continuity between Putin's statements at the August 15 press conference with Trump and his previous statements demonstrates that he remains committed to the view that Ukraine's existence as a state and territorial integrity depend on Ukraine's alignment with Russia.

Russia conducted drone and missile strikes in Ukraine in the hours before the August 15 Alaska summit, causing civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure ... US President Donald Trump responded to the August 15 Russian strikes while en route to Alaska, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “trying to set a stage” ahead of the summit.

Trump stated that the Russian strikes will “hurt” Putin's ability to make a deal with Trump. Russia continues to conduct drone and missile strikes that result in high civilian casualties even as Trump has repeatedly called on Russia to stop strike series that disproportionately affect civilian areas.

The United Nations (UN) reported on August 13 that Russian air and drone strikes in July 2025 contributed to the highest total monthly casualty toll since May 2022.

US President Donald Trump called Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on August 15 ahead of the Alaska summit and thanked Lukashenko for releasing 16 prisoners.

Trump stated that the United States and Belarus discussed the release of 1,300 additional prisoners, the Alaska summit, and plans for a future Trump-Lukashenko meeting. Belarusian state news agency Belta claimed that Lukashenko invited Trump and his family to visit Belarus and that Trump agreed.

Belta added that Trump and Lukashenko discussed bilateral relations, regional affairs, and war in Ukraine. Lukashenko recently met with US Special Envoy to Ukraine General Keith Kellogg on June 21 and requested an interview with Time Magazine published on August 8.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

@NOELreports

NYT reports that Putin is demanding Russian be made an official language in Ukraine and security guarantees for Russian Orthodox churches. At the same time, he said: “I want the war to end as soon as possible and to move toward resolving issues by peaceful means. The meeting with Trump brought us closer to the desired results.”

The only peaceful meaning is to get out of Ukraine, and then talk.

Another fire broke out at the Volgograd oil refinery. Local media report it was caused by a fuel dump during repairs of damaged storage tanks. The facility was recently attacked by Ukrainian forces.

Is there any question where the people of Ukraine stand on Ukrainian sovereignty?

And here it is.

Putin is blaming Ukraine for the war.  The reason being that Ukraine is full of nazis (as well as drug addicts and criminals).  And as long as Putin continues to utilize this claim as a reason for war, there will be no peace.  As long as phantom nazis remain inside Ukraine, Putin is justified in his continuation of the war.

47 seems to have more or less handed Ukraine to his close bosom buddy after a day of celebrating in the former Russian colony of Alaska and renewing their deep and abiding friendship - 47 never met a dictator thug he didn't love at first sight. TACO Trump rides again!!!

No "security guarantees" will matter a wit when Russia takes the rest of Ukraine with 47's blessings.

Republicans Increasingly Support US Military Aid to Ukraine, Survey Shows

A new survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs shows rising support among Republicans for sending US military aid to Ukraine. Conducted between August 1 and 12, 2025, the poll found that 51% of Republicans now support continued military assistance, a sharp increase from 41% in early 2024. The Chicago Council on Global Affairs published the findings on August 15.

“Republican opinion has shifted dramatically in the last year, and Trump's personal involvement in the negotiations with Russia appears to have been a major factor,” said Craig Kafura, assistant director of public opinion and foreign policy at the Chicago Council.

Six in 10 Americans support the US sending arms and military supplies to Kyiv (62%, up from 52% in March) and providing economic assistance to Ukraine (61%, up from 55% in March);

The most substantial changes are among Republicans (+9 percentage points for economic assistance, +21 for military aid) and Independents (+7 economic, +10 military). Notably, 51% of Republicans now back military aid to Ukraine;

Large majorities of both Republicans (74%) and Democrats (77%) support increasing sanctions against Russia;

Six in 10 Americans (60%) express a favorable view of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; just 10 percent view Putin favorably.

Missing Targeting Pods, Inflated Bills: Inside the Troubled Su-57 Procurement Program

Aug 16, 2025

Su-57 is often showcased by Moscow as Russia’s most advanced fighter jet in in inventory. In 2023, the U.K. Ministry of Defence confirmed that the aircraft had been used in combat since at least June 2022. Yet despite the war raging for over 3 years, sightings of the jet remain exceptionally rare.

There may be a reason. The U.K. MOD has assessed that Russia is likely holding back the Su-57 to avoid reputational damage, a blow to export prospects, or the loss of sensitive technology that could follow if the aircraft were downed over Ukraine.

But what else do we know beyond the reported damage to at least one Su-57 in 2024, the result of a successful Ukraine's Defense Intelligence operation in Akhtubinsk?

Newly obtained classified documents, accessed by our team, Frontelligence Insight, through a Ukrainian analytics firm “Dallas”, show that Russian Ministry of Defence purchased its fifth-generation Su-57 fighters from Sukhoi for more than 3 billion rubles each. More interestingly, at the outset of the war, these jets were delivered without certain targeting subsystems, leaving them short of advertised operational capabilities.

In September 2024, our team examined the Mikropribor plant, which produces the module (MPPU-50) for the Su-57. The investigation revealed that Western sanctions had cut off supplies of key microchips, disrupting contracts and delaying production.

Now we know the problems extend beyond MPPU-50 modules supplied by Mikropribor. The fresh batch of obtained documents show that in 2021, a year before the war, the Russian Defense Ministry formally accepted Su-57 aircraft without the 101KS-N system, an important electro-optical targeting subsystem. This was made possible through Additional Agreement No. 8 and Decision No. 4, which allowed the military to accept the aircraft and retrofit later. In practice, the jets were delivered in stripped-down form - still airworthy, but lacking capabilities advertised by Moscow.  .  .

https://frontelligence.substack.com/p/missing-targeting-pods-inflated-bills

The Su-57 is their equivalent of our F-22.  Russia has lost one of these since the 2022 invasion began.
