FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino showed up to work and carried out his scheduled duties on Monday, according to a report from CNN. The latest update comes after several sources and media outlets reported that Bongino was considering a move to resign over disagreements with Attorney General Pam Bondi concerning the release of files pertaining to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Bongino did not show up to the FBI office on Friday and was reportedly not responding to colleagues falling a major falling out with Bondi. As of Monday morning, nobody in the Justice Department had talked to Bongino since Wednesday, when he treated to resign over the department’s handling of the Epstein case.
President Trump was reportedly not happy with the ongoing feud, particularly with Bongino’s threat to resign. The president defended his attorney general in a social media post over the weekend, stating that she was doing a “fantastic job.” He also praised the FBI for their efforts to investigate the Russian collusion hoax, the 2020 election and more while urging both sides to come to an agreement.
With Bongino’s future uncertain, Vice President J.D. Vance reportedly stepped in to work as a potential mediator. The vice president spent the weekend taking calls from numerous department officials, including Bondi, Patel and Bongino, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.
When asked about the situation on Sunday, President Trump confirmed that he had also spoken with Bongino. “I think so. I spoke to him today,” the president said when asked whether his deputy FBI director would be staying on. “Dan Bongino is a very good guy. I’ve known him a long time. I’ve done his show many, many times. And he sounded terrific, actually, no, I think he’s in good shape.”
Patel also responded to reports that he too was considering his resignation over Bondi’s handling of the Epstein case. “The conspiracy theories just aren’t true, never have been. It’s an honor to serve the President of the United States [Donald Trump] — and I’ll continue to do so for as long as he calls on me,” the FBI Director wrote in an X post.
In a statement Monday, White House spokesman Harrison Fields mentioned Bondi, Patel and Bongino as part of Trump’s “incredible team of Law and Order patriots who are committed to Making America Safe Again and restoring the integrity of our criminal justice system.”
“Attorney General Bondi, Director Patel, Deputy Director Bongino, and the countless other heroes of our law enforcement community are dedicated to executing President Trump’s agenda of protecting civil rights, safeguarding communities, holding criminals accountable, and defending victims. This work will continue in lockstep and with unprecedented success,” the statement said.
Despite the blowup, Bondi reportedly has no intention to fire Bongino and is leaving the decision of whether to stay or resign up to him.
Bongino’s decision to return to work comes as Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law who currently works as a host at Fox News, revealed that the administration plans to release additional files on the Epstein case in the coming days and weeks.
