Washington — Secret Service suspended six personnel without pay as the agency faced intense scrutiny after the assassination attempt against President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, nearly a year ago.

Matt Quinn, Secret Service deputy director, told CBS News that their penalty ranged from 10 to 42 days of leave without pay or benefits. The personnel were placed into restricted duty or roles with less operational responsibility upon their return.

"We are laser focused on fixing the root cause of the problem," said Quinn, who defended the agency's decision to not dismiss anyone after the security failure on July 13, 2024, in which a gunman opened fire during a campaign rally and a bullet grazed Mr. Trump's ear. One person was killed and two others were wounded while the alleged gunman, Thomas Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service sniper.

"We aren't going to fire our way out of this," Quinn said in an interview Wednesday. "We're going to focus on the root cause and fix the deficiencies that put us in that situation."

"Secret Service is totally accountable for Butler," he said. "Butler was an operational failure and we are focused today on ensuring that it never happens again."

Quinn said the personnel were disciplined according to a federally mandated process. Quinn told CBS News the agency has been focused on addressing the root causes of the operational failures that played out in Butler. To do that, the Secret Service introduced a new fleet of military grade drones and mobile command posts that allows agents to communicate over radio directly with local law enforcement – interoperability that didn't exist last year.

I thought the whole communications snafu was a lesson that had been learned back at Desert One, trying to get hostages out of Iran. Poor communications led to the failure of the operation and loss of equipment and troops. Everyone involved needs at least one channel in common.

Six members of the Secret Service have been suspended for failures related to last year’s assassination attempt against President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pa.

The suspensions for the six agents ranged from 10 to 42 days, and they won’t be paid while on leave, Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn told CBS News on Wednesday.

The agents will not be fired, but upon return to work, they will be placed in roles with diminished operational responsibility.

A Secret Service agent from President Trump’s protective detail was suspended, along with several from the Pittsburgh field office, as the agency meted out discipline for the failures that allowed the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt to occur, The Post can reveal.

Six agents were given suspensions following calls for accountability after Trump was wounded when a sniper crawled on a rooftop and fired several times.

The lawyer for Myosoty Perez confirmed that she was among the agents suspended.

She was pictured protecting then-candidate Donald Trump as he arrived at the event where he was shot in Butler, Pennsylvania. Law enforcement sources said Perez was sent to the site in advance of the campaign event and tasked with helping to secure it.

Six agents in all were given suspensions of 10 to 45 days following calls for accountability after Trump was wounded when a sniper crawled onto a rooftop and fired several times at the then-GOP front-runner.

One agent, who was sent to do a walk-through of the site in Butler and help coordinate security for the campaign event, was disciplined, law enforcement sources said.

Four leaders from the Pittsburgh field office were also suspended, the sources said — in addition to an agent on the counter-sniper team.

Two weeks after the failed assassination attempt, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, a 28-year veteran of the agency, resigned in disgrace after weathering bipartisan calls for her to step down.

The widow of Trump rally shooting victim Corey Comperatore said the president called her after watching her interview on Fox News and vowed that he would always be there for her.

Helen Comperatore also told Fox News Correspondent Alexis McAdams that Secret Service Director Sean Curran phoned her as well, mentioning he was heartbroken after watching her speak ahead of the 1-year anniversary of the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. Curran said he will meet with her to review the case, according to Comperatore.

"We were all sitting ducks that day. Our blood is all over their hands. I am angry. I lost the love of my life. They screwed up," Helen Comperatore said during the interview while demanding accountability from the Secret Service.

The Secret Service has admitted to multiple failures after 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks climbed onto a rooftop and fired off eight rounds. Those shots killed Comperatore – a volunteer firefighter -- and wounded three others, including then-former President Donald Trump.

"Why Butler? Why was that such a failure? Why weren't they paying attention? Why did they think that that roof didn't need covered? I want to sit down and talk to them. I have the right to. They need to listen to me," Comperatore told Fox News.

She said during her call with Curran, he apologized that she went so long without receiving updates and said that now that he is in charge of the Secret Service, things will be different.

Curran pledged to try and answer all the questions she has about the July 13, 2024, shooting, Comperatore added.
