Meanwhile, clean energy policies in Maryland contribute to rising electricity prices in Pennsylvania.

As I noted in my article discussing a lawsuit against energy companies asserting they are to blame for heat waves, abundant and inexpensive energy is critical to human health and happiness.

It turns out “clean energy” Maryland is now making this discovery.

Pennsylvania State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York) noted in a Facebook post that surplus electricity from Pennsylvania was sent to Maryland during the peak demand period as temperatures in the region neared 100°F. She attributed the avoidance of a blackout crisis in Maryland to Pennsylvania’s reliable power grid, referring to Maryland as the “neighbor with green energy initiatives.”

Just a friendly note to our “green energy” neighbor – Maryland: You’re welcome. During this heat wave, Maryland consumers demand a lot more energy than it generates. If it was not for Pennsylvania – it would be lights out and air conditioning off.

This is another reminder that Maryland should work on supporting (and not shutting down) baseload energy generation rather than require farmers in Southern York County to give up pristine farmland to construct more transmission lines.

So, it looks like Pennsylvania saved Maryland from a Spanish-style blackout.  Zero Hedge’s Tyler Durden has a fairly robust assessment of the root cause of Maryland’s energy woes.

One big problem this week...

Substation fire could leave thousands of central Pa. residents without power for days

There are more than 7,700 residences without power in Adams County as of Tuesday afternoon, as power company Met-Ed is racing against time working on solutions for outages in two different areas as temperatures once again soared into the 90s.

About 4,000 outages were initially reported in the Littlestown area when the transformer blew at the substation around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

But, while Met-Ed was working on the outages in the Littlestown area, a Met-Ed substation caught on fire in the Gardners area in Tyrone Township, Adams County, around 9 p.m. Monday. Meyer said firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly. Initially, 13,500 customers lost power. The power was back on for about 8,000 of those customers. About 5,500 customers in the area still don’t have power.

“Our focus right now is getting those customers back on,” Meyer said.

But, it could be a long few days for those customers. A lot of the substation was damaged beyond repair, Meyer said. The company will investigate the incident at a later time after the power is turned back on for those customers, Meyer said.

It is expected to be a multi-day outage due to the complexity of the repairs. Currently, the estimated time to turn the power back on for those customers is 11 p.m. Thursday. As Met-Ed makes progress, Meyer said the company will provide a more definitive restoration time.

As of late Tuesday evening, there were 7,708 residences in Adams County without power, including 897 in Germany Township, 2,193 in Littlestown, 1,297 in Menallen Township, 587 in Biglerville, 658 in Butler Township and 477 in Tyrone Township.
