New York City May Elect an Unhinged Socialist as Mayor
David Strom  8:00 AM | June 18, 2025

Yes, yes. I know "unhinged" and "socialist" go together like peas and carrots, but it is a headline.

Now, on to the story.

New York City does elections the new-fangled way, using ranked-choice voting to ensure that the outcomes take forever to tally, the results tend to lean left, and voters are maximally confused.

That makes predicting outcomes particularly difficult, although you can balance the difficulty by assuming that the worst outcome possible is the most likely. Throw in the fact that a plurality of New York City voters will reliably make the wrong choice when it comes to electing people, and suddenly it should surprise nobody that a socialist candidate has a very good chance to live at Gracie Mansion soon.

I don't have a problem with people getting good and hard what they voted for. They earned it.

I just hope to steer clear of the bulk of those consequences by staying far away.

Shocking poll shows Zohran Mamdani overtaking Andrew Cuomo in NYC’s ranked choice primary
By Carl Campanile
June 23, 2025

Lefty upstart Zohran Mamdani has leapfrogged over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the city’s ranked choice Democratic primary for mayor, according to a stunning new poll released Monday.

In its hypothetical initial round of voting, Cuomo’s lead shrinks to 3 percentage points, with 35% of likely Democratic voters supporting him compared to 32% for Mamdani and 13% for city Comptroller Brad Lander, the Emerson College Polling/Pix 11/The Hill survey found.

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams follows with 8%, Scott Stringer 3% and 5% split between candidates Zellnor Myrie, Whitney Tilson, Jessica Ramos and Michael Blake, with another 4% undecided.

But since no one garners the more than 50% of the vote needed to win outright, the ranked choice system kicks in. That means that even if a voter’s first choice is eliminated in successive rounds of calculations, their other picks could still be in the mix and emerge as the eventual overall winner.

Mamdani finally surpasses Cuomo in the eighth round of the simulated ranked choice voting — 51.8% to 48.2% — in the latest poll conducted June 18-20.

Poster's comments:
I recall reading that New York City now has a muslim population of around 1- 1.5 MILLION.
They will almost certainly vote as a block to elect a muslim for mayor.

NYC is going the way of London.
Made possible, of course, by the miracle of ranked-choice voting.

In a one party city of 8 million, can the democrats not recruit somebody besides a disgraced lockdown governor to head off a self-professed socialist?  This is one of the most high profile jobs in politics.

A shock poll suggests that the Marxist-Muslim Zohran Mamdani will be New York’s next mayor
By Andrea Widburg

When people think of American commerce, they think of New York. And when people think of American Jewish culture, they also think of New York, which has the largest Jewish community of any city in the world outside of Israel. But if the polls are correct, New York may soon have a mayor who is an avowed Marxist and an antisemite. (And yes, I equate anti-Zionism directly with antisemitism.)

Tomorrow is voting day in the New York Democrat party mayoral primary. This matters because the greatest likelihood is that whoever wins the Democrat primary will be New York City’s next mayor. The chances of a Republican winning, after all, are slim.

The two main Democrat candidates are Andrew Cuomo, about whom much is known: He was the fairly competent former governor of New York, whom liberty-minded people rightly despise because of his COVID policies, especially sticking COVID-infected patients into elder care facilities, infecting the most vulnerable, and causing thousands of unnecessary deaths. However, this doesn’t mean he gets a pass from the leftists, who were completely on board with his deadly policies. Leftists also despise Cuomo because he was accused of harassing women.

In sum, Cuomo is a morally reprehensible man viewed from either side of the aisle, but he’s also a functional executive.

@MattWalshBlog
The fact that a foreign socialist even has a chance to be elected mayor of NYC proves that the voters in our major cities are essentially suicidal. They want to see their own communities destroyed. It’s a spiritual and mental sickness. I don’t think there’s any way to fix it.

Cuomo doesn't realize that most of his father's supporters (aka Goodfellas) are dead, in Federal prison, or have fled to Florida.  This isn't the same New York that his father Governed.

And he didn't really care about it until, like Hillary Clinton, he wanted a comeback vehicle. Cuomo lived in the suburbs.

As a conservative, I say let the socialist win. Cuomo's going to try to spoil it with a third party run and that might give people in that city pause to maybe consider the Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa.

Cyber predicts:
"We'll know today if NYC is in the frying pan or the fire."

Actually, I don't think it will work out that way, Cyber.
Remember, this is "ranked choice".
If no one receives 50% +1 on the first "round" of counting, there is some shuffling and the counting starts all over again.
And then, if no winner on the second round...
... a third one.
And... on and on until they come up with "the winner".
I don't think they'll have that worked out tonight, or even tomorrow.

Here's a screenshot of PART of the ballot:

(there's pdf of the ballot attached below)

I don't know if ranked choice voting is also used in the general election in November.

Remember, this time it will be essentially a THREE-way race:
- whoever wins the dem-communist primary today
- eric adams (who will be running on an independent line)
- Curtis Sliwa (who will be running again as a Republican)

Sliwa got just under 27% of the vote in 2021, but I'm thinking he could get more this time. Maybe into the low 30s.

Adams won last time with 70% or so. I'm thinking he's going to keep at least half of that (mostly the black vote), and perhaps pick up some of the Jewish voters who can't bring themselves to vote for Sliwa. So he could receive 35% or even a little more.

That leaves another 35-38% up for grabs for the muzzie candidate.
If this guy really blows it on the campaign, particularly with some anti-semantic comments, he just might alienate enough Jews to go over to Curtis and give him a plurality.

But -- then again -- will the general election be ranked choice?

That can be done in real-time as the votes are counted. The calculations are slightly more complicated but nothing that the computers tabulating these votes can't handle in a few seconds.

There is some talk -- really "just talk" -- that Cuomo might be considering running anyway, but as an "independent".

That will make it a FOUR-WAY race:
- the dem/com muslim
- adams (as an independent)
- cuomo (also independent)
- Curtis Sliwa (Republican)

If the general election is also ranked-choice, things could get interesting.

EDIT:
Further investigation suggests that only the mayoral primary election(s) are ranked choice.
The general election is still (might as well get used to the term) "traditional-one-man-one-vote".
That means in a three-way contest, the candidate with the plurality wins.

Mark Penn Describes How NYC Primaries Were Manipulated To Benefit Mamdani

Mariane Angela
News Reporter

Font Size:

Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn appeared on Fox News Thursday to describe how the New York City primaries were manipulated to benefit Socialist Democratic New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.

With 88% of ballots counted, Mamdani was ahead with 43.5% of first-choice votes, while former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo trailed with 36.3%. During an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” Penn said the timing and structural shifts in the election process have significantly benefited far-left candidates at the expense of moderate Democrats.

“This is a big problem, and there is a lot of panic, I think, in New York, generally, in terms of what can they do? How can they get someone in the general election? Remember, these primaries were played with,” Penn told host Laura Ingraham.

Penn said that only around 400,000 votes determined the outcome.
