I'd say the future is in drones, not manned aircraft.

Every time someone brings up drones, especially AI drones, I can’t help but think about the SyFy series Eureka episode “Bad to the Drone”.

Agreed.

I think it will be a combination, but drones will be the primary first wave attack aircraft. Eventually, drones will dominate the air, if for no other reason than not being held back by the G-force limitations on a live pilot, but for a while, there will be people up there commanding drones, trying to counter them electronically, and if successful at that, engaging in combat or more direct ground strikes.

The military still needs to get drones relatively close to the enemy.  I would picture missiles launched from subs as a possibility.  Missiles packed with drones that come apart for release of the drones. :pondering:

Drones as a sort of submunition...interesting concept.

The Ukrainians are already using larger drones to haul smaller ones around, so it makes sense.

I could see something like a C130 deploying them by the pallet load, too (but they'd have to be AI and/or have pre-programmed targets).

Wouldn't it just be easier to pack 10,000 of them inside a -ahem- scientific balloon like the Chinese like to unleash, and let it fly over the target?

Send about 100 of them to 'collect' the information.

Oh, I forgot, those countries don't have a Biden around so enemies can commit balloon espionage without interference.

At this point any aircraft could be made into a drone with an AI controlling it.

The 47 is designed to be manned or unmanned, will be mothership to drone swarms. It is the future.
