In spite of the open-borders crowd’s hysteria over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actively enforcing the law, the agency continues to make our communities safer by rounding up dangerous illegal alien criminals. On May 27 (just as the rich and famous are about to settle in to their summer mansions), as part of an ICE operation on the Massachusetts islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, immigration enforcement officers apprehended approximately 40 illegal aliens. This included a documented MS-13 gang member and “at least one” child sex offender.
The identities of the arrested individuals have not been released yet, but ICE revealed, without further details, that many of the detainees had a criminal record of some kind on U.S. soil. Their capture was the product of interagency cooperation. ICE was assisted by the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Coast Guard, demonstrating the administration’s all-hands-on-deck approach to enforcing our immigration laws.
Local authorities – which were notified the day before of the planned operation – did not participate. This is not surprising, given that Massachusetts and Dukes and Nantucket Counties, where the two exclusive vacation islands where the raid took place are located, are all illegal alien sanctuary jurisdictions. State Senator Julian Cyr, representing the Cape and Islands District, complained that the raid had “sent a chilling message to many residents” and that the arrest of two suspected criminals did not justify the operation’s extent.
